    Mattie’s point of view

    1.
    August 30th, 1793

Today was once again another hot and sticky day of August. It was the end of a week of unceasing heat. (6)
    2.
Later in the day we go word that we had been invited to the Ogilvie mansion for tea. The Ogilvie girls were awful and rude. Mother and Mrs. Ogilvie were talking when all of a sudden Colette stood up and said something like “ I fear, I’m burning.” Then she fell down onto the carpet quicker than you could say Colette. (7)
    ¾.
I.. I.. I didn’t know what to say, what to do. As soon as Colette hit that floor the whole room went silent. I think it even got more silent when mother bent down, felt Colette’s forehead and said “It's the fever!” My first thought was oh no. Then is was gotta go, gotta get out of here. No One can get sick. Then it was, wait what fever. Then I realised oh. OH NO! The fever that had killed Polly! I knew instantly gotta get out of there.(7)

    3rd person point of view

    5.
I feel that Mattie is maturing a lot more in these chapters while mother is ill. She ran the whole coffeeshop on her own basically. Although everything was going wrong Mattie still didn’t give up and she kept trying.(9)
    6.
A real-world connection to these chapetres would have to be to dance moms. Now your all probably thinking, what does dance moms have to do with “Fever 1793?” Well although this is a drama show, some people don’t like to be dramatic and well with Abbie everything is really hard. In a way Abbie is like mother and Mattie is like the girls. The connection between the two is that the girls/Mattie keep going thru hard times and are pushed to the bone but, Mattie/the girls stay strong.(9)

    1. I love your connection! I could also somewhat relate maddie, mackenzie, and melissa from dance moms to the ogilvie family. I see this connection because they were seen as the "favorite" family in abby's eyes. This meant that they were one of the more privaliged familes that got things that other families didn't get.

    2. I agree! Although I haven't really watched the series I can obviously tell who is favorited. I can tell that this is true and I love your connection!

  2. During chapters 6-9, Mattie is in in the Ogilvie's house and in the coffee house. During this time, it is late August and early September. (1) During these chapters, Mattie faces many conflicts. While at the Ogilvies, they keep taunting Mattie and her mom, calling them poor because they work in a coffee shop. While having tea with the Ogilvies, one of the girls gets yellow fever and dies. One of the major conflicts of these chapters is that Mattie’s Mom (Lucile) get diagnosed with yellow fever. This causes Mattie to have to move away with her grandfather. (2) During this time, Mattie feels great distress. She protests going away and she wants to stay with her Mom. She is practically forced to go away. She also feels anger. This is shown when Mattie is at the ogilvie and they make fun of her and the coffeehouse.(3) Some instances of yellow fever in these chapters are when mattie’s mom is diagnosed with it, and when one of the Ogilvie girls falls ill with it. (4) During chapters 6-9, Mattie matures by becoming more dynamic. This is because she feels a wide range of emotions in these chapters such as anger, determination, and distress, whereas during the first few chapters she was very basic. (5) I can connect the movie “Downsizing” to Fever 1973 because in the movie, the main character’s mom falls majorly ill with a disease. This connects to Fever 1973 because the main character’s mom also gets extremely sick toward the beginning of the novel. (6)

    2. Why/how is Mattie so basic at the beginning of the book?

    3. She is basic because she does not feel a wide range of emotions whereas in chapters 6-9 she does. -Nate

  3. It is the beginning of september and Mattie is in the coffee house with grandfather and her mother. They are opening their daily mail and they see a letter from the Ogilvie family inviting them to tea. (1) Mattie did no want to go to tea with the Ogilvie family because she says that the oglivie girls are snobs. She also does no want to go because of her son Edward. (2) Mattie felt embarrassed and angry because she did not want to go. (3) When Mattie and her mother went to the Ogilvie house for tea, they were having a conversation and Colette suddenly fainted from yellow fever. Later in the story mother suddenly gets the fever which I am thinking was from Colette.(4) Mattie matures because she is turning more responsible in doing what her mother says and doing what she is told. Also, when she is having a conversation with the Ogilvies she is polite and proper when she talks.(5) This is sort of like cinderella. This is because the two step sisters and their mother (cinderellas step mom) are like the ogilvies and Mattie is cinderella. (6) -Aly E

  4. It was early September, when Mattie and her mother were invited for some tea at the Ogilvie house. Mattie and mother got all dressed up to have some tea with this fine family.(1) Mattie faces multiple conflicts throughout these chapters. For an example, Mattie had to get all dressed up to go to the Ogilvie’s house, which she didn't want to go. She didn't want to see Edward the son because Mattie's mother wanted them to be together. Another conflict Mattie went through was when her mother was told she had yellow fever because this meant that she had to leave the city. So, Mattie did not get yellow fever.(2) Mattie felt very scared when she found out that her mother had yellow fever. She knew that she would have to leave her mother. Mattie also had anger when the Ogilvie girls were making fun of her and her mother and their coffeehouse.(3) Yellow fever began to spread while many were Fleeing from this terrible disease. While Mattie and her mother we're at the
Ogilvie's house their oldest daughter had fainted while having coffee, they were all very surprised. Mattie's mother became ill with yellow fever. Then Mattie had to leave the city with her grandfather. (4) Mattie is beginning to realize that she needs to help out around the coffeehouse and with her mother while she was ill. She also is learning how to be proper and well spoken while she had tea with the Ogilvie's house. (5) The Ogilvie girls and their mother connects to the story of Cinderella. This connects because the Ogilvie girls and their mother are like the stepsisters and their mother because they make fun of Mattie just like they did to Cinderella. (6)

(Mother’s Point of View) It is now nearing nightfall, and I can see Mattie constantly dozing off, but catching herself to stay awake and watch over me. I have fallen ill over the course of today, and she is the only one left home to care for me, and I must say she is doing an excellent job. As a mother, it seems twisted and strange to have the child you once bathed bathing you, but I can see how much I mean to her, and for that I am grateful. (1) Even laying under all these blankets Mattie has carefully placed on me, I just can’t seem to get warm, and my arm aches from a hazy memory in which my blood was drained into a can. Even in all these baths she has given me, I just can’t bring myself to stop shivering. And, especially in such a rough time, Mattie is showing me how much she cares, ad how much I mean to her. (2) She has seemed to be forcing herself to grow up in the blink of an eye to take care of me, and although it pains me to have to sit here and watch it, I am so thankful. She gets more experience every time she bathes me, and figures out a new way to help me warm up under the blankets getting back into bed, which means she’s growing up every minute, and I have no way to stop it. (3) Being sick seems so unlike me, and although I’m fearing the end is near, I’m also realizing I have everything I desire in life. But I can’t help but think, did Colette ever get to experience that? Did Polly? Did anyone who’s live’s count that rang on that horrid bell get to experience everything they wanted to in life? I’m afraid they did not. (4) But in the end, have I really done everything I’ve desired? Especially with Mattie. Ever since the day she was born, I have made plans to teach and show her wonderful things, but have I failed as a mother? She seems to despise me in the mornings, but today she has shown a whole different side. She has matured, and started acting like an adult, which scares me more than anything, because what if she turns out to hate herself because she grows up around me, thinking that’s just how everyone’s mother was,and that’s how she should mother her children. Stern and old-fashioned to bits. I hope that won’t be the case. (5) (My Point of View) These chapters remind me of another book I’ve read, called Stone Fox. In the book, the main character tries to do everything in his power to help his sick grandfather, and nurse him back to health. He is forced to quickly grow up, and take care of his grandfather on his own. (6)

I really like your comparison, and I can also relate to a show. In "Supernatural", there are these two brothers, Sam (Younger) and Dean (Older). Their father is hunter, and isn't home much. Dean has to grow up quickly and care for his brother, especially when he is young and/or sick. He is then on his own for most of his younger life with his brother. Again, I feel like your comparison really works with Fever 1793, and it really made me think!

August 30 1793, (1) It's been a hot sad week (2)(4) earlier in the week we went over to the Ogilvies for tea colette fainted and mother got sick with yellow fever (5) and I had to care for her a while by myself. (3) Could I have helped when Colette fainted? Could I have helped mother more when she is sick? (6) I can make a connection to Frozen, when Anna got hit with Elsa's powers Kristoff had to care for her just like Mattie did with her mother.

    (6-9) (Mattie’s POV)

    (1) Another hot day in my town. Many people had died of yellow fever and I was feeling concerned from all of our well beings. I was putting on my nicest dress and a minimal amount of makeup when this story begins. (2) My mom said that we had to go to the Ogilvie family to have tea. I didn’t believe her, since I knew that she just wanted me to pair up with their son, Edward. Not just that, but they kept making fun of us, for having a “poor” lifestyle and owning a coffeehouse. (6) Both of the Ogilvie sisters fairly reminded me of the stepsisters from snow white. They had everything they wanted, which included fine jewelry and dresses, gorgeous china tea cups, and a large, lavious manor. They seemed to very subtly make fun of me too. (4/3) All of a sudden, I see Colette stand up and start fanning herself. I know it is a sunny, sticky day, but it couldn't be THAT bad. “Mama, it’s rather warm in here…” I vividly remember hearing from her mouth. Then all of a sudden, she collapsed. Not a reason why. Except...Yellow Fever.Though I am not very fond of the family, I could not help but feel bad for the poor girl. She had just been engaged to Lord Garthing’s son. I ponder about how he feels knowing that the love of his life has just had her life taken away. (5) The next day, I saw my mother in the street. She looked in pain. The doctor said that we had yellow fever, and my heart dropped. I tried to care for her but she wouldn’t let me, she just kept blowing me off. I feel like I am maturing as a person, wanting to help someone out. I was set to help her. She said she wanted me to leave and take care of grandfather, which is what I did. I will take care of my family, even if that means putting my own life at risk.

Do you have any predictions as to why Yellow fever is spreading so quickly around the town of Philadelphia?

      Delete
    2. Mikayla H.

      Great Question!
I think that a reason that yellow fever is speading so much is because this time period was set in the summer, and the summer can bring lots of bugs including mosquitos. Also, I think that the area that Mattie lives is really hot during that time, so it could attract more bugs.

    4. Great Question!
I think that mattie was more stressed when she realised that her mother just wanted to protect her becuase she would realise that she was trying to keep her safe even though Mattie disobeyed her many times.

(Mattie’s point of view) - Today was not too much the same, we got an invitation to an Ogilvie tea party, I don’t even want to go they just want us there to make fun of us. (1) Mother forced me to go though she just want to feel fancy, and who would have guessed when we got there we just got made fun of. (2) It was really annoying knowing what we were walking into, Jeannine sticking her tongue out at me and her saying we run a grog shop. (3) Not too much longer after that Mrs. Ogilvie collapsed on the floor we think she has the fever. (4) Mother got sick and I wanted to take care of her, she didn’t want me to so I wouldn’t get the fever but I didn’t want to just leave her like that. (5) It’s harder trying to be more responsible trying to pretty much live on my own like the Baudelaires from A Series of Unfortunate Events. (6)

Question: Um Brock where is the setting really I just can't see it. Then why do you think that they really started making fun of you, I know you said because they were rich but why do you think that they get that perspective that you work at a grog shop? Then also was Mattie really poor or was that the Ogilvies girls just didn't like Mattie?

      Delete
    3. Kaidyn, the setting was Ogilvie mansion, because they are so used to higher class things and a small dying coffee shop isn't higher to them, lastly she was very poor and thats why the girls didn't like her.

(1): “The month August has passed by, still 1793, making it closer to the colder months of this year. I still can hear the occasional bell here and there. I was able to visit the Ogilvie's the last day of August, I had to wear the most horrible dress ever. Nevermind that, during the tea party, Collette, the oldest of the two had collapsed due to what Mother said, was the Fever. Days after going to the printing press with Grandfather brought back memories and then seeing Mother being, just dumped, right in front of our house by a person in black ragged clothes. Then later that night I got to see Mother vomit up some black fluid and looking worse than ever. It’s really worrying me.

(4): “During the tea Party at the Ogilvie's, the oldest of the two twins, whom are Collette and Jenniane, Collette was not acting normal, then she had gotten up and said “I fear” a couple times before saying “I’m burning up” and collapsing to the floor. With that Mother went knelt down, felt her head and said “The Fever”. A few days after that the church bells would ring non stop, over and over. That same day I had experienced Mother being dumped in front of our house with Grandfather and me running towards her after Grandfathers pursuit of the wagon pusher. ”

(2): “I, Matilda Cook am going through some tough times. When we were invited to the Ogilvie's house for tea, I had to put a horrible dress on and see Collette dropping to the floor as Mother shouted “The Fever!”. Speaking...speaking of the Fever my Mother...sorry...she just doesn’t look like my Mother. So sickly pale, vomiting up black fluid and just looking horrible. She also mentioned that she wants me to go away because she’s sick. But the Doctor that had come over today said it was not Yellow Fever which had relieved me slightly, just slightly.”

(3): “I have felt a bit grumpy when we (Me and Mother) were dressing up to go to the Ogilvie's house, well I don’t know about Mother, but I did not like dressing up like a ‘China doll’ as Grandfather noted. (I felt like I would break as easily like one of those). When we were walking home from the print shop until a few days after the Ogilvie's tea party me and Grandfather were approaching a man in black ragged clothes pushing a cart had kept on going disregarding Grandfather, until he came up to our house and dumped the cart and I had realized that, the cargo was, Mother. This had set me over, I was tearing up, and I just was so...very sad. Especially during that night when I say her powerless and just so horrible vomiting up black fluid and croaking and ‘softly’ yelling at me to leave and go away. This, just makes me so sad...but the Doctor that had came over today said she did not have Yellow Fever. Which just sort of calms me down...not really.”

(5): “The word maturing, as I feel that explains me quite well due to the fact that me and Mother were invited to the Ogilvie's house for tea. Even though I myself did not want to go there myself, but I had accepted my loss against the adults. But a little deep down, not really, anyway I had felt a bit...older. Yes, I know I hated them all but still, a formal tea party. Anyway, sorry if I choke up a little here it just pains me. I also on September 2nd felt like I was maturing, helping to bathe Mother to make her feel better and that night...oh god...trying to help and calm her with encouragement, and wiping her head with a nice cool sponge. But in return I get scolded and yelled at to leave and go away.”

    Third Person
(6): During the end of chapter 9 when Mattie's’ Mother is sick and she is trying to help but her Mother just says “Leave me” and other things and Mattie feels powerless. I can relate to Mattie because whenever my Mother is sick I go to check on her she would sometimes say that she would want to be alone and for me to leave because she doesn’t want me getting the flu. When Mattie feels all sad about her Mother looking horrible that’s how I feel when I see my Mother looking so bad and depressed and I feel sad just like Mattie.

What do you think would have happened if they had not gone to the Ogilvie household? For example, do you think that mother would have gotten sick if she hadn't been around Collette?

      Delete
    2. I believe that Mother more than likely would have not gotten sick if she did not go to the Ogilvie's, but the fact that she did and she made direct contact with Collette by feeling her head and the fact that she was sitting next to her during tea. This all leads me to believe that if Mother did not go she would not have gotten sick.

In chapters 6-9 mattie is seen in many different places. Mattie gets invited to the Olgivile families house for tea. During this time Philadelphia is really hot.(1) During these chapters Mattie goes through some conflicts including, being treated very poorly by the Olgivile sisters, Mattie's mother also ends up getting the fever and tells Mattie to leave as soon as possible. Mattie soon leaves the Coffee house with grandfather. (2) Mattie goes through many emotions like, stress and sadness when mother gets the fever. Mattie also feels mad and embarrassed when she finds out she has to go have tea with the Ogilvie sisters. (3) Matties perspective during these instances show us that she was upset and scared for her mother because of the fever. Mattie was also quick to leave the city with her grandfather. (4) Mattie developing as a character through these chapters because she is becoming more independent by taking care of her mother while she was sick and nobody was there to help her.(5) Something I can connect to these chapters are cinderella. This story connects because of the Ogilvie sisters and the stepsisters from Cinderella. Both are really snobby and are mean to others.

(Mother’s Point of View) It is almost nighttime, and I can see Matie dozing off in her bed room but always catching herself opening her eyes so she can watch over me. I have became ill today and she is the only one in the house to watch over me or take care of me. She is doing an excellent job. She is a wonderful daughter because me being the Mother and have my daughter watching over me in quite weird. But she is just wanting to be there for me. (1) Mattie has been trying to make me feel comfortable and help me feel better. But I can’t help but feel the pain i’m going through. I get so cold, my arms ache from a memory of my blood drained into a can. She has done all she can to try and help me feel better. Mattie cares about me so much, she loves me with all her heart to make me feel better. (2) She seems to be forcing herself to grow up and act like an adult, but he takes care of me and I am so thankful. She starts to become more experience with all the things she has been doing for me. She gets better everyday. I have no way to stop it. It’s not like I want to stop it, but I want her to also take care of herself. (3) Feeling sick is not like me at all. I am fearing the end of my life because of this sickness. I can’t help but wonder if anyone went through this like I am right now. Did Polly? Did Colette? Did anyone from my family? I guess i’ll have to figure it out. I am afraid it is correct. (4) Have I done everything I could to be a perfect mother for my kids? I always told my kids that I would do things with them later on as they grow up. Will I be there to see them grow up? This fever is driving me crazy! Mattis has matured so much, will I be there to see her do things in her older life? I have always wanted to see my kids do things they have always wanted to do. I hope I am not a terrible mother. (5) (My point of view) All these chapters remind me of this movie I have watched called “Cinderella.” When ella was young her mother died of sickness. She was all alone with her father until he died fighting. She then went with her step-mother that married her father. She was horrible to her but she maid the best of it. (6)

The heat was horrible just like it always was. Me and Mother got invited to The Ogilvie’s for afternoon tea. Since it was such a rare occasion I decided to actually do my hair and put on a nice dress. (1) These past weeks have been a struggle, first I was forced to go to the Ogilvie's afternoon tea, while there colette Mrs. Ogilvie's daughter Colette fainted at that point we then realized Colette was infected with Yellow Fever. After that something even more horrible happened my Mother got infected by Yellow Fever. That night I was left alone to take care of mother during this horrible time, it was very difficult for me to watch such a strong person like Mother suffer from such a horrible epidemic. (⅔) Mother and collette getting this disease shows how quickly it was spreading around the city of Philadelphia. (4.) I feel as a person throughout these rough times it's such a horrible thing but I am learning quite a few things like determination, how to be strong etc, and If it weren’t for this epidemic hitting my hometown of Philadelphia I don’t know if I would have ever learned those skills. (5) Throughout the past weeks I feel like I’m can really relate to Cinderella. Whenever we got invited to the Ogilvie's for tea, the Ogilvie’s sisters treated me like I was nothing just like how Cinderella's stepsisters treated her. These past few weeks have been some of the worst in my life but I do have to say there are many new things I’m learning.

Cinderella does all the chores her home as well just like Mattie. When you said they went to the Ogilive's, they were treating her like she was nothing just the step-sisters treat Cinderella like nothing.

  14. (Mattie point of view) Chapters 6-9

These past few days have been let’s just say interesting. I got invited to tea time with the Orgilves and that was probably the worst tea time I have ever had. One of the daughters, Colette specifically, died of the fever. It really showed me that anyone could catch this horrendous fever. The Orgviles house was splendid and rich. Mother only made me go to this tea party to set me up with one of mrs. Orgivile’s sons and I would much rather be set up with Nathanial Benson. (1)

These few days like I said earlier, have been very peculiar and unusual. There has been many bad things that have happened. To name a few, I got in an argument with my mom about the tea, I experienced Collette dieing, and Mother was in a wheelbarrow waiting to expire. I got in an argument with Mother about the tea. This was a bad thing because she wants me to marry an Orgilve boy and I would much rather not. Second, I saw someone die right in front of me and I found out that anyone could catch this fever. Lastly, I found Mother lying unconscious in a wheelbarrow. Some of the body barriers thought that she was dead so did we at first.(2)
I don’t like what is happening to Philadelphia. The town full of people catching morning coffee has shrunk into only a few per day because of this yellow fever. My Mother has been through a lot lately and I feel bad about complaining a week ago. I really wish we could figure out what is wrong with her and I sure hope it isn’t this deadly yellow fever.(3)
Yellow fever has brought me and my family a lot of pain. For example, we saw a girl my age die right in front of us. A girl my age and right in front of us. Wouldn’t that scar you? Well it sure scared me. Another reason why yellow fever has damaged our family is that my mother could have yellow fever. We are not sure yet but because this fever is very contagious and going around mother could have it. If she does then we will have to close the coffee shop and even worse we could lose mother.(4)
I have changed throughout these few days because I have learned that life is important and how we should be kind to people because you only live once. I have learned this because after seeing mother like that I realized that I should have just done my work without complaining.(5)
The connection I make is between chapters 6-9 and Princess Diaries 2. I connect these two things because in Princess Diaries 2 they want her to get married to a prince so she can become queen of her country but she wants to choose who she wants to marry. In Fever 1793 Mattie’s mom wants her to get married to Edward Orgivile but she would rather get married to who she wants, Nathaniel Benson. (6)

The day is august 30th and our character Mattie is doing laundry on this hot day.The cooks get invited to dinner by the ogilive’s and colette fainted.Guns were fired off in the streets and a cannon was fired in public square to”purify the air”.Business was going down and they don't have very much sugar along with other supplies.Advice has been sent out from the college of physicians and Eliza likes it(because the bells stop ringing).Everyone is starting to run away to the country so not many people left to come to the coffee shop.On the way to the shop a waggon with mother in it was dropped at the coffee shop.Mother is sick Dr. Kerr says she has yellow fever .Now Mattie and grandfather leave town to go to the Ludington's farm who knows what awaits our characters next.

    (Mattie´s point of view)

I am staying up late to watch over Mother. Knowing she is sick is making me feel horrible. Mother is such a strong independent women and seeing her sick and down is one of the worse sights in the world. Even though sometimes she makes me mad I still love her very much and hope she is ok. (1) My Mother is very sick. I am very upset to see her this way. She talks about how strong she is and how she can do anything. Seeing her in bed doing nothing sicker than ever hurts me as much as it hurts her. I lost Polly from yellow fever, I can`t lose my Mother from it too. (2) I still can't get over the fact that Mother has yellow fever. She is unhealthy and it makes me so upset. I need to help Mother. She helps me with everything and it's my job to give back to my Mother. She makes me happy when I´m sad, so it's my turn. (3) Many people have been diagnosed with yellow fever. People are dying and it all started with Polly. Then Colette while Mother and I were at tea. Now Mother, oh my sweet Mother and how much she is in pain and how she is feeling. The first doctor who came said that Mother did not have yellow fever, but then the next morning a different one came and said she had the fever. That morning was one scary crazy morning. (4) I am now starting to realize that I can help out more around the coffee house then I thought I could. Ever since polly died I have been realizing that I can be more helpful. Also while my Mother is in a unhealthy state right now it is my job to take care of things and help her out the most I possibly can. (5) I found something funny when we went to the Ogilvie´s house. It kinda felt like Mother and I were in Cinderella. The Ogilvie Sisters and very mean to Mother and I. They calls us poor and lazy. This is just like the way that Cinderella is treated in the book. 18. Izzy Ramey ( Mattie's POV)

(1)Over the past 4 days, so much has happened. I’ve been all over Philadelphia; in the coffeehouse and out in the city running errands and such. Mother and I also took a trip to the Ogilvie family household. I really hope Collette is okay, she didn’t look very well when she fainted! That’s pretty much everywhere I’ve been this week so far. Coffeehouse, out in town, and the Ogilvie's home for tea. Yeah, that sounds right. (2) Things haven’t been easy, and they just keep getting harder and harder. For one, there is the Collette issue. This goes to show that anyone can get the fever, and that makes me nervous. If it affects girls like me just down the street, how long before it gets to me? That is my second problem of the day, Mother is sick. I am not sure what is wrong with her right now, but I have a bad feeling. She isn’t like her normal self, and that man dumped her on the street! I really regret calling her horrid, because now she is helpless. Yet again another problem; if she has the fever, I can’t help her and she can’t run the coffeehouse. It’s going to get shut down by the doctor anyway. (3)Like I said earlier, I guess i’m really nervous and anxious. With all of those previous issues, it’s like the weight of the world is on my shoulders. Does mother have Yellow Fever? I don’t know, and that alone is killing me. I can’t tell what will happen, what is even going on? I’m just trying to cope with the fact that i’m a teenage girl, and that doesn’t put me high up on the list of status already. This is why I really hate emotions. That makes me think, is Nathaniel okay? I need to figure these things out. (4)The big issue in this town is still Yellow Fever. It is all over the town, making its way into homes and daily life. I have seen rich families pack up and leave, too nervous about the sickness. Here again we have Mother. That doctor said she didn’t have the fever, but i’m not sure if I believe him. Taking care of her right now, she seems to be getting worse and worse. She already kicked me out once in the fear that I would get whatever she has. We saw it at the Ogilvie home too! It looked just like what everyone described, and we were there as it happened. Quite frankly, I don’t know how to respond! This fever is popping up everywhere. (5)Even through all of the bad, i’ve noticed one thing. As tragedy occurs, adults leave me with more and more responsibility. Maybe it takes an epidemic for them to realize they can treat me like an adult! First, it was extra coffeehouse work for Polly. Becoming a waitress and helping Eliza and Mother in the kitchen had to show that I could handle it. Then, I went on that errand run. I got basically everything on that list, which should show the adults that I am a capable young woman. Now I’m taking care of Mother, the roles are reversed. They are trusting me more and more this time. After all this time, maybe now these things i’m doing are paying off. I also went to tea in a nice outfit like ‘a good young girl’. If I can stick it out through that horrid dress and passive aggressive conversation, I should be treated that way too. I’m showing maturity, getting things done like a real woman! (6)Looking at all of these past events, I can make a connection. Someone spoke of a ‘show’ called Supernatural. They talked about ‘season 5’, even though i’m still not sure what that means. There are 4 horseman, and the 3rd one is Pestilence. As this old man travels from town to town, he is spreading sickness everywhere and to every person he touches. It reminds me of the Yellow Fever. As people get bitten by mosquitos, make contact with others who are sick, and transmit the disease, more and more of Philadelphia is affected. If not contained, it will travel from city to city like the old horseman Pestilence. I can relate the spread of sickness here to the spread of sickness on the ‘show’ Supernatural. All they had to do was get a ring off of a man’s finger, if only killing this fever was that easy.

Thanks! I saw that movie too, and that connection really works. When you think about it, there are a lot of shows, movies and books that have the whole 'sickness is spreading' plot. In most of these, the main characters have to survive and/or get rid of it. What are your thoughts?

    (1) Mattie is still at the coffeehouse, but mother is sick with what Dr. Rowley said isn’t Yellow Fever. (2) Mattie was told by mother over and over to leave her and that she would be fine without her help. This made Mattie very disappointed that mother didn’t want her help. Also, when they were at the Ogilvie's residence, Collette dropped to the floor supposedly from Yellow Fever which frightened Mattie. (3) Even though mother wanted her to leave Mattie refused and kept trying to help her get through the night. (4) Mother became sick and at first Dr. Rowley said it wasn’t Yellow Fever, but they later found out that she did have the fever. Grandfather and Eliza left the coffeehouse leaving only Mattie to take care of her. (5) Mattie matured by taking n the role of caring for her mother when there was nobody else to care for her. She helped her through black vomit. (6) When mother was sick and struggling, it was kind of like how superman was kicked out from the planet to save him. So both parents were looking out for their kids by sending them away.

(1)Its September, 1793. It is another hot day in philadelphia. (2)We were invited to the ogilvie mansion for tea, mother wanted me to be the bride of Mrs. Ogilvie’s son. Colette said “I fear, I’m burning” Then fell to the floor. (3)I was so embarrassed and upset, Jeannine was insulting our coffee house calling it a filthy little tavern and a Grog Shop. (4)I didn't think yellow fever was a big deal but not it going around a lot faster and more and more people are getting it every day. (5)Some doctors say mother is fine but others say she has been affected by the fever. (

My mother has yellow fever, I don’t even know how it could be possible. She is staying in our bedchamber at the coffeehouse, she doesn’t want me to see her like this. She has always been so strong and independent, she just wouldn’t allow it.(1) She sent me away with Grandfather, away to Ludington’s. I don’t want to go there at all! But I know I need to go, this will benefit us all. It will keep grandfather and I away from the sickness. Its what my mother wants, it will help her if she knew I was away. (2) But I feel like I need to be with my mother she needs me more than she thinks. I want to be with my mother, I need to know she is being properly cared for. (3) The yellow fever is just horrid, It is taking away so many lives from innocent people. I never thought it would affect our family, it's so unreal.(4) As more issues occur I seem as though to have more and more responsibilities. Like how I had to step up, do as my mother said and leave the city to protect grandfather and I. I also have to be strong to leave my mother as she is suffering from the fever, not knowing anything about her for a long time, too long of a time. (5) In Gossip Girl, Serena has to leave her town, school and best friend Blaire to protect her reputation. She has no idea what is going on back at home, if anyone has found out her secret. She has to leave her family and not see them for a long time, until she was able to come back after a year. Serena had to stay strong and hopeful for when she came home and was away.(6)

Ever since we got back my mom hasn’t been looking so good so we are going to have a doctor come over and look and see if she’s ok, i sure hope she is. *mother vomits*. I don’t think that's good “ELIZA!” oh no she’s already gone. I’ll just have take care of her through the night.

A real world connection to this scene is in the book/movie the devil's arithmetic the main character finds herself in a completely different time then going into a concentration camp. this connects to this scene because in the devil's arithmetic she wasn’t familiar with anyone there at the concentration camp and she felt alone and scared like maddie in this situation she was left with her sick mother and didn’t know how to care for her and also felt fear.

These past few days have been awful. The date is September 2, 1793, and I have recently been diagnosed with yellow fever. Mattie has sat at my bedside almost the entire time I have been sick. But, before all of this happened we were invited to tea with the Ogilvies. We got the letter the same day they invited us, which was August 30. (1) I feel awful for Mattie having to see me like this. She has had to see me in my darkest times these past couple days. I can see her start to drift off throughout the night while she is watching me. She has given up so much for me. She has also been taking such great care of me by giving me my food, drinks, and changing my bed sheets. (2) Mattie has to be afraid of what is happening even though she won’t show it. She has been even stronger than me during this time. She has taken over the responsibility of watching me all night and day, changing my covers and bathing me. (3) She continually tells me that everything will be okay throughout the night. She knows that I can make it through this. She has always thought that yellow fever was an awful thing, but she has never been afraid of it until now. Now, i’m afraid, she has become terrified of it. (4) I am so proud of Mattie. She has learned to stand up to me, and take care of someone. When we were reading the note from the Ogilvies she refused to go, though she still ended up going, she put up a good fight. Like I said before, she has also taken over the responsibility of taking care of me. (5) In the movie Beauty and the Beast made in 2017, the Beast and Belle go back to visit Paris where Belles mom died of a plague. This relates to Fever 1793 because yellow fever is considered a plague multiple times in the book. Since Mattie’s mom is the one with yellow fever this gives a strong connection to Belle’s moms death in Beauty and the Beast.(6)

1 I'm in my moms room she is asleep I sit by her side I am scared she doesn't want me here what will she say when she wakes will she be mad I don’t know she had talked about taking me to the Ludington's farm but I don’t want to go I love it here so much the smell of coffee lingering around, Elisa and her good cooking , I just don't want to go. The sun is bright on third street, the streets are quiet and everyone is gone i'm sad but it’s for the best I will be back to the sunny streets of Philadelphia before I know it.2. My mom, seeing the blood being let out of her was heart wrenching the thoughts going threw my head I couldn’t bring it to words. Elisa wanting me to leave was the worst feeling of all she is one of my best friends she is like a sister I wanted her to come with us but she wouldn’t.3 I am sad that mom is sick I love her so much and I don’t want to imagine life without her she is strict but I know she means well I would be scared if I didn’t have Eliza and Grandfather. 4. Yellow fever is a fever is a fever that has taken my friends and enemies life way too soon and I hope it doesn’t take mine Mother is sick with the fever and I hope she can recover but till then I have to think the best. 5. Mattie has matured by helping take care of mother by bathing her every so many hours and changing the sheets and taking on more responsibilities not only in the coffee house but with mother in general she tries not to cry and show weakness in front of mother so much that mother wouldn’t break down and I feel like that was very mature of her. 6. In these chapters I would like to relate Eliza to Stephanie in Fuller House because she is always stepping up when it comes to the kids like Eliza is to Mattie, In Fuller House Stephanie cooks for the children as Eliza does for Mattie also, When mother is not around for Mattie to talk to Eliza steps I as does Stephanie. Lastly both Eliza and Stephanie have mother like qualities and are there for the kids when they need them most.

Also with that Doctor that stopped us and kicked us out just because grandfather was coughing and then accused him of having yellow fever.(2)I just have very mixed emotions about mother having the fever and telling me and grandfather to go away just got me really upset because I did not ant to leave mother and Eliza alone at the coffee shop.(3)The fever i getting worse and worse with the wealthy leaving and everyone trying their hardest to get away from the fever I hope that Nathaniel is ok though.(4)While mother was ill me and Eliza had to take care of her and give her baths and feed her and comfort her which had made me feel more independent because I got to help my mother without any of her help and yeah Eliza helped but I still did a lot of work.(5)In “Dear Old Dad” Steven Universe Steven's dad hurts his leg and Steven had to help him out and get him food and get around.(6)

(Mattie’s point of view) 1)These past few months have been quite interesting. While still, very hot. 2)Mother made me go with her to tea with the Ogilvie’s, which was just horrid. One of Mrs. Ogilvie’s daughters fainted during tea. Mother was sick with the fever. It’s been very hard taking care of her while running the coffeeshop as well, but i’ve managed with Eliza to help. 3)I’ve felt stressed with all of this, especially mother getting sick. 4)I’m worried about her after what had happened to Polly. 5)I think i’m becoming more mature, as i’m helping mother, and around the coffeeshop much more. 6) A real world event I can connect to Mattie’s situation is the newer version of the movie beauty and the beast because Belle does lots of errands for her father and takes care of him and she traded her place for her father to help him out and Mattie doe many things to help her mother out and wants to do as much to help as she can. -Audrey K.

(point of view maddie) It is late august early september Well the Ogilvie's invited me to their house and i really do not want to go.I did not want to go because I didn't want to see Edward the son because my mother wanted me and him to be together. The ogilvies girls were awfully rude and Meanwhile at the Ogilvies, they keep taunting me and mom, calling us poor because we work in a coffee shop.I did not appreciate how they were treating us.While having tea with the Ogilvie's, Colette gets yellow fever and fants. That was pretty scary and i did not know what to do.Mother was acting different then boom she fainted. I did not know what to do.We went back home and mother told me to leave and i did not want to but she forced me to. Me and grandpa were forced to move away for a while till mother gets better. This connects to a real life situation because in hunger games everyone is by themselves for survival just like mother tells everyone to leave for there survival so that they do not get yellow fever.

Grandfather woke up coughing the doctor did not let us pass because of this. The farmer had left us there on the road .On the way back to philadelphia we found a chestnut tree to rest under.Grandfather fell asleep and i went to look for water i found some. I went back out to look for food and found some pears but I don't feel to good and they are getting pretty heavy.I can relate this to the book the hatchet when they are abandoned and need to survive in the wild.
