Chapters 20-25

Comments

  1. Oliver McDavid

During chapters 20-25 maddie was in the coffee house to begin with living there by herself grieving over the loss of her grandfather but after that she realized that grandfather would want her to keep going, so she did, after that she eventually found Eliza helping people that had the fever then the second setting is in their house above the cooperage(1)

throughout chapters 20-25 maddie had to deal with and go trough losing one of the few remaining parts of her family and getting over that, but she also experienced good times like when she kept Nell instead of giving her to the orphanage. also on the contrary she also felt sadness at the thought of losing Nell to the fever (2)

In the chapters 20-25 she experienced hope or joy, when she found eliza and. she also experienced fear when she found out when The twins and Nell both had yellow fever. but then after they recovered and the frost came she once again experienced joy or happiness.(3)

Some instances of yellow fever include when Nell and The twins all get yellow fever but they all recovered when the frost came. Another instance of yellow fever is when Eliza says that mother recovered from her fever enough to go to bush hill. (4)

Maddie develops as a character in these chapters by going from grieving the loss of a lost one (not that that is a bad thing) to helping other fever victims and helping Eliza around the house and helping deal with the twins and in turn making her more independant.(5)

I can connect these chapters to the story of cinderella because she loses parts of her family and then she has to become more independent from her 2 not very nice step sisters and not very nice mother. (6)

    2. i think that she would have been sad because she created a bond and she felt more about Nell losing another person in her life. Rather than Mattie losing someone but to answer your question she would have been sad about losing another close person in her life

September 27th, 1793, Mattie is looking for somewhere to go because mother is gone and grandfather is dead.(1) While Mattie was looking she found a little girl named Nell whose parents both died from the fever. She also found Eliza and is now working with her on helping the sick.(2) Mattie wants to keep Nell for herself and her own happiness but knows that she would be better off at the orphan house. Mattie does like helping but not so much the job.(3) Mattie is now taking care of all three kids that have the fever and with the help of Eliza.(4) Mattie is helping with random patients and the three kids and she has to become more responsible and mature to be able to help everyone.(5) Mattie is like SuperNanny, how she was taking care of the kids. Mattie had to become more motherly and take care of the kids kind of like how SuperNanny has to.(6)

(Mattie’s Point of View) It has been hard here without Grandfather, but now that I at least have Eliza, it’s a little less tough. Lately I have been forced to try and cope with the pain of losing him, and the pain in my foot. I’m now in bed, which is a folded sheet on the floor by Nell and the boys. Eliza is finishing her caretaking for the day, and Joseph is in bed.(1) I was helping Eliza earlier in the day, until I noticed the scab on my foot from the rock in the garden bleeding open, and Eliza sent me home. Despite the fact that my mind is set more on searching for my mother in every house we walk into, it’s somewhat calming helping those people. Or maybe I’m just hoping I’ll get my mother, or even Grandfather back in return.(2) Either way, I’ve been trying to hold my head high for Nell, who seems to be liking her new ‘family’. I’ve been telling her stories about my childhood. About my father dying. About all the amazing memories I’ve made with my mother. About everything else in between. I’ve told her about Nathaniel, and I’ve told her about Grandfather. I’ve even talked her asleep with stories about the infamous Cook Coffeehouse. Somehow, telling Nell all of these stories seems to ease me.(3) But, it seems every good family cannot stay together forever, for I am fearing the fever for Nell, and Joseph’s boys. I’m fearing that because they are so little and prone to sickness, they wouldn’t survive. But, all we can do right now is wait, for the fever has cleared out merely the whole city.(4) Taking care of the children has become one of my top priorities, right behind caring for sick folks around the city. They seem to be growing close in my heart, and I feel as if it is my job to protect them at all costs. They are the only family I have right now, and I must cherish that.(5) (My point of View) These chapters remind me of a movie called Over the Hedge. They remind me of this because, in the movie the main character RJ doesn’t have a place to live, or any food, so he finds a group of other animals that take care of each other like a family. They then take him under their wing, and he becomes part of their family. This connects to the story because in these chapters, Mattie and Nell are taken under the wing of Eliza’s family, and become a part of it.(6)

  4. After Grandfather's death Mattie goes to the burial site to give grandfather the proper burial. Then, Mattie wanders around the street were she finds a little girl named Nell and later finds Eliza. Mattie and Nell go to Eliza's house and meet Eliza's brother Joseph, and his sons William and Robert. Nell, Robert, and William get yellow fever, so Mattie and Eliza take the children back to the coffee house so the children could get fresh air. (1) Mattie experiences grandfathers death which leads to Mattie being on her own to survive. Mattie finds a little girl named Nell on the streets and now is caring for her with Eliza's help. Mattie also goes with Eliza to care for the fever victims.(2) Mattie has to has to deal with being alone now that grandfather has died, she had began to wander the street and found a little girl named nell on the streets because her mother had got ill with the fever and died.(3) Instances of yellow fever in these chapters, are Mattie and Eliza had to help out fever victims. Mattie help with cleaning up the homes of the people that had passed away. Nell, William, and Robert all became ill with yellow fever as well. (4) Mattie is growing as a character because she is becoming stronger because she had to live on her own and survive for herself. When she found Nell she is now caring for a young child that had lost her her mother. Mattie is also caring for the ill, and at the beginning of th book Mattie would have not cared for the sick and take care of a helpless child on the street.(5) A real world connection to Fever 1793 is the story of James and the giant peach because James had to do chores for his aunts, while Mattie and Eliza are helping the fever victims do their chores.(6)

    6. Nick, I believe that Mattie would be very upset if she lost Nell to the fever because she has been caring for nell for a while now. Nell had also lost someone she loved like Mattie had lost her grandfather. Nell was very important to Mattie because she did not leave Nell at the orphanage, so she thought that it is now her responsibility to take care of Nell.

  5. (Matties point of view) chapters 20-25

It is now the end of september and it has been a rough few days. I feel like I haven’t slept in a very long time. Probably, ever since grandfather died. The streets are still very empty and there's very few people alive or around in Philadelphia. Lately I have been helping Eliza care for the sick and I have experienced and seen a lot.(1)
I have experienced a lot these last few days. First of all, I had to watch my grandfather get buried, second, I have a new responsibility which is to take care of nell and third is that I have to take care of fever victims everyday with Eliza.(2)
I had to watch Grandfather get buried which was very hard to experience. My grandfather really meant a lot to me and I was very sad to see him go. Second, this new responsibility is that I have to take care of Nell. When I first found Nell I felt happy because I didn’t feel as lonely which was something I was struggling with, but it became difficult once I realized that it was another mouth to feed. Lastly, I am responsible for taking care of the sick with Eliza which is hard because I have to see people dying and young children seeing their parents die. (3)
Yellow fever has, once again, affected me in a lot of ways. Such as, finding Nell. I only found nell because her mother died of yellow fever. (4)
I have changed because I have been given new responsibilities. For example, I have to take care of Nell and the twins, Robert and William, and I have to take care of those deceased with yellow fever. I also have to take care of Joseph because he is still recovering from yellow fever. (5)
My connection is between Tarzan and Chapters 20-15 in the novel Fever 1793. The connection is that in Tarzan Kala, the mom gorilla, takes in Tarzan after his parents die and Mattie takes in Nell after her parents die. (6)

    (1) September 27th 1793, Mattie's grandpa has died and she lost her mother so she has nowhere to go (2) after a while Mattie found a small girl named Nell, whose parents had died and after a little bit longer of searching Mattie found Eliza helping houses of the sick (3) Mattie does not feel welcome in the house and fears Nell will get sick because Robert and William are sick and Nell eventually does (4) Perspectives and instances of Yellow Fever in these chapters are when Mattie helps Eliza care for houses of the sick and when Robert and William get sick.(5) Mattie is becoming more independent because when she finds Nell she has to care for Nell and herself, and when Mattie finds Eliza she has to care for homes of the sick and care for Robert and William. (6) A connection I can make is to the greatest showman P.T Barnum cares for his dad when he is sick in the beginning of the movie.

The settings for the chapters are the graveyard, streets, coffeehouse, and Eliza’s apartment. They take place during October, 1793. (1) During these chapters, Mattie experienced grandfather being buried, finding Eliza, and taking care of an orphan and two boys. (2) During these chapters, Mattie felt rage whenever she saw that the people at the graveyard were mistreating her grandfather’s body. This is due to the fact that she felt that it was wrong to bury someone without a prayer. Mattie also felt joy and relief whenever she fond eliza. This is because she had been searching for her and mother throughout almost the entire duration of the novel. On top of this, she felt protective of the children. This is shown by her taking care of them by giving them food and shelter while they are sick with the fever.(3) Some instances of yellow fever in chapters 20-25 is when Mattie and Eliza take care of people around the city who have the fever. Yellow fever also appears whenever the kids get it. This is a huge instance of Yellow fever because this is a point where Mattie develops as a character. (4) Mattie Matures as a character during these chapters by becoming more responsible. This is because of the fact that she took care of three children when they were struck with Yellow Fever. This takes a lot of responsibility because it takes constant effort and food gathering to care for the children. This took more effort than when she took care of grandfather, which makes her more responsible and hardworking.(5) I can connect these chapters to the movie “Martian” These connect because in the movie, the man stranded on Mars must put in hard work in order to survive in a difficult situation. The difficult position in fever 1793 is when the kids get the fever, and Mattie must take care of them. Although the two are very different, they are the same when in comes to this basic conflict. 8. Chap 20-25 (Mattie’s Point of View)
(1): “Being at Grandfather's burial. Surviving on my own. Finding and taking care of a young girl whose name is Nell. Finding Eliza after all this time. Seeing her family. Still not knowing about mothers whereabouts. Seeing the 3 youngest children Robert, William, and Nell being sick with yellow fever. Going back to the coffeehouse with the children. So much in so little time has happened.”

(2): “Experiencing everything I did within this amount of time was crazy. I know those men who were burying the bodies were doing there job but I had to forcefully push someone and talk to them in a somewhat mean manner to get there attention. The least they could do was bury his body with respect. Then when Eliza and I came home from delivering food and caring for some families we had found out that William, Robert and Nell, all had the fever. Eliza and I had been caring for the children and ourselves for a little while and it’s not going well but at least it’s much cooler here than at Eliza’s place.”

(3): “I’ve felt a little shocked because when Mother Smith and I were talking about Nell and how I need to send her to the orphanage. I just felt a little shocked. I could care for her she doesn't need to go to the orphanage and that’s what I did. I took her in as my own. I had also been thinking about the children. Will William, Robert and Nell survive yellow fever? I don’t know. Eliza wanted to bleed but I insisted that we don’t do it because I had survived yellow fever and I was not bled. Hopefully they do survive this horribly yellow fever. That’s all I’ve thinking about for the past days. Will they survive.”

(4): “The only times I had seen that horrible fever is when I had seen Nell’s mother and the 3 children have the fever. Poor kids. When I had ran by Nell’s house and seen her saying “Mama’s broken” then looking at her yellow tinted mother. I had too take her in as my own and care for her. Then when I see the 3 children laying on the bed. Robert and William laying close together for comfort. It’s not right for them to have the yellow fever. Poor kids.”

(5): “ I still feel like I am maturing due to the fact that I am helping out the people impacted by yellow fever and helping care for the three children. What I would do to help out the people impacted by yellow fever is Eliza and I would delivery food to the families and calming the children. I also am helping to take care of William, Robert, Nell by preparing for when they wake in shock and need water and also washing them and trying all the herbs and tea and poultice to break the fever.”

(Third Person) (6): When Mattie and Eliza came home and had found out that the 3 children had yellow fever I can relate to this because when my family came home to our puppy and when my dad took her outside to use the restroom she wouldn’t. She also wouldn’t eat. When we took her to the vet we found out something was wrong with her stomach. Then kinda like how Mattie and Eliza were taking care of the 3 children my family and I had to take care of our dog and watch closely like how Mattie and Eliza was with the 3 children watching closely.

In chapters 20-25 Mattie is found in several places. She goes to the burial grounds to bury grandfather in the proper way. She also stumbles along a little girl Nell and runs into Eliza. They end up going to Eliza’s house and there Mattie meets Eliza’s brother Joseph and his boy twins William and Robert. Mattie thinks about taking Nell to the orphanage but they tell her it's really full there and it would be better off if Mattie kept Nell. The twins end up getting the fever and Eliza and Mattie take the kids back to the Coffee house. (1) Mattie experiences many things through these chapters like surviving on her own now that grandfather is dead. Mattie also has to take care of the little girl she found on the street Nell because her parents died and the orphanage was full. (2) Mattie has to deal with being alone and losing someone very important to her. (3) Some instances of yellow fever in these chapters are when Mattie and Eliza help out with the fever victims and when William and Robert end up getting the fever. (4) Mattie is developing as a character because she has become much more of a motherly figure due to the fact she has to take care of a lonely child she found on the streets of Philadelphia. She also is by herself which makes things even more difficult for Mattie. (5) I can connect these chapters to the movie Divergent this movie connects to these chapters because once you turn 16 you are told to choose a life and basically survive without your family just like Mattie surviving without grandfather. 10. It is 1793 in the story and the frost is coming soon. They are getting into september and it is getting colder so people are starting to come back to the city. (1) Mattie was debating what to do rather to look for mother or stay put and wait but she decided it was right to go. Along her way she found Eliza and a toddler named Nell and took Nell in as her own for a little while. (2) Mattie then started to get attached to Nell and started to love her like a daughter. (3) Mattie later finds out that Nell has the fever. (4) Mattie has to then make the decision to either keep Nell or take her to the orphan house. (5) I can connect the book and movie the giver to this because they have to make the decision on what they will do for the rest of their lives just like how mattie did. (6) -Aly Eash

I really like your connection, and I can relate another show to it. In, Supernatural there was a situation where the very literal end of the world was coming. Sam, Dean and Castiel, the main characters, had to decide what they were going to do. Sam had to decide if he would say yes to being Lucifer's vessel, and Dean had to choose whether he would say yes to the archangel Michael. These decisions would impact the rest of their lives, just like the choice in The Giver.

(Mattie POV) It has been very hard without Grandfather here with me but now that I hae Eliza, it has been much better. Lately, I have been trying to get into my head that he is gone and I no longer am with him. I am lying on my bed right now and tucking in the kids and getting ready to go to bed. (1) I was helping Eliza earlier and I saw a scab on my foot and it was bleeding open. She sent me home. I was still thinking of every place my Mother could be. I was trying to see if I can get any information on where my Mother could be. I think if I get the news out, i’ll find her quicker. Maybe even Grandfather will come back. After all this, I have to stay calm. (2) Either way I think, I feel sad all the time. I do not know where my Mother is and Grandfather is dead. But yet, I feel very confused. Where have I been this whole time? Did I do something wrong? How could I have lost them? I try to stay happy, although it doesn’t work very well. (3) I guess it seems to be every good family cannot stay together for ever. Even tho I am fearing of the fever for Nell, and the Joseph’s boys. I am afraid because they are so little, their bodies may not be able to survive the fever. (4) Being me, taking care of children have been one of my top priorities. They seem to be getting to me and making my heart warm. I feel like are my own children. For right now, they are my only family I have and they are the only people that are there for me. (5) (My point of view) A real-life connection is the movie James and the giant peach. The main character James has been taken into care from his Aunts and he has to do chores in house. This relates to Mattie because she was taken into care from Eliza and has to take care of the sick fever victims. (6)

After the death of her grandfather Mattie went to bury Grandfather at the burial grounds. Mattie was able to find Eliza. Eliza took her back to where she was staying with her brother Joseph. Mattie meets Nell while walking in the streets. Nell is a toddler who lost her mom to the fever therefore Mattie is taking care of her. Eliza and Mattie take Nell, Robert and William back to the coffee house to care for them after they got the fever. (1) Because Grandfather died Mattie had to learn how to take care of herself and Grandfathers body. She meet Nell and started to care for her as well, like Nell is her sister. Mattie and Eliza both go to take care for fever victims around the city. (2) Mattie has to get used to being alone after Grandfather passed, and cannot find Mother. She had a hard time but stayed strong. Until she found Eliza and Nell. They both made Mattie feel better and have an easier time getting over Grandfather and Mother. (3) In these chapters instances of yellow fever include how Mattie and Eliza take care of the sick. Also how Nell, William and Robert all get the fever and again take care of them. (4) Mattie has become a lot stronger throughout these past chapters. Also she has been taking care of so many people with the fever, like Nell, Robert and William, caring for them 24/7 for days at the coffee house. (5) A connection to these chapters is the book “Out of the Dust” in the book the main character has to take care of herself during the dust bowl. And stay strong because her mom and brother died, her father still blamed her for their deaths. She also was all alone because her father would ignore her. Just like how Mattie had to care for herself while she was all alone, like the character in “out of the dust”.

After a conversation she learns the little girl's name is nell and her mom died . Then they saw two women she thought she knew one of the women and she realized it was eliza they chased her until she finally found her and another woman from the free african society they catch up while they walk back . once they get there Mattie learns they had been helping people throughout philadelphia. Mattie joins the group and meets Eliza's brother Joseph who had yellow fever at one point and his sons William and Robert. The next day Mattie goes out with Eliza but return to find out Nell Robert and William have all fallen sick they decide to take them to the coffeehouse to recover because it is more airy. Once there Eliza decided she wanted to call a physician and have the boys bled but Mattie begs her not to because it kills more than it saves.Eliza finally agreed and they just took care of them they made a lot of noise until one night where everything was silent. This was a long one this group of chapters sure had a lot of events heavy to the plot.Anyway i can connect i can connect the situation with Mattie and mother to the situation in the book The Hatchet when the boy is stuck in the woods and his mother is looking for him this one might be a little bit of a stretch however.

It's been a crazy few months and I have experienced things I would have thought I would never encounter. 1.) Throughout these past months Grandfather passed away, when it came time to burying him Mattie became mad at the Graveyard workers because she wanted to say a prayer so Grandfather would forever remain in peace. And then finally when I met with Eliza after a while her brothers two kids and Nell the little girl whose mother died of yellow fever contracted the fever. ⅔.) In these chapters some instances of yellow fever include grandfather getting buried and he died from yellow fever also the kids Mattie had been staying with and taking care of contracted the fever as well. 4.) Mattie has developed as a character throughout these chapters tremendously, she has to not only care for herself but now she has to take on the responsibility of taking care of others like the yellow fever patients and Eliza’s brother twin boys and Nell. 5.) A real world connection could be the Hunger games because Katniss had to take care of a little girl named Ruth during the games because she was still just a kid just like how Mattie had to take care of others and herself.

I love your connection! I can also relate the book to the hunger games beacuse in Fever 1793 they are all trying to fight for survival, like they are in the hunger games, but in a different manner.

  15. (1)(Matties pov) It was September 27th, 1793 we were at the coffee house the market, eliza's brother's house, a brief stop at the orphanage, and the coffee house again. (2) I wake to a man outside saying "bring out your dead" we take grandfather for burial and i pray for him. A very superstitious woman thought i was sick with the fever and beat me with a cane. I found a little girl named Nell while i was in the deserted streets of Philadelphia (not that i ended up leaving), then i see these two women and one looked extremely familiar, it was Eliza! After our reunion we go to Eliza's brother's house, which he was ill, Joseph (Her brother) Had twins named robert and william but soon after the little ones get hit with the fever. (3) I felt quite sad, Grandfather had died, the little ones got the fever. I tried to help as much as i could with the children and the patients. I convinced eliza not to bloodlet the children because my experience at bush hill. (4) The children have the fever. (5)(3rd person pov) Mattie is becoming more helpful because she has helped care for the children when they had the fever. (6) I can relate to eliza and Mattie's reunion because a while ago i lost contact with an old friend and when i got a phone the messages sent and we are still friends to this day.

    (Mattie’s POV) (20-25)

    (1) “Bring out your dead” I heard. It wasn’t a dream. Grandfather was really dead. I was going to throw up. I helped the man who has handling the bodies get them to the graveyard. When we got there, I demanded a prayer from them. I was such a ninny. After this terrible experience, I finally went to the streets to go back home. (4) While outside, I found a little girl named Nell. Nell was about 3 or 4, roaming around the streets with a broken doll in her hands. I offered to help her find her mother, but she said that her mama was broken. Another fever victim, and another homeless child. (2) I had lost all of my family, and there was no one left. Mother was missing, Eliza was also missing, and Grandfather was dead. How was I supposed to care for myself while caring for another? But I couldn’t help but feel bad for the child. I had to bring her in, and take care of her to the best of my abilities. (6) I can relate this to James and the Giant peach. In the book, James meets the insects, in which they treat him like part of their family. I have treated Nell like family by trying to take care of her in a moment of Crisis, like the insects did when they were off to shore. Also, James did his best to do all of the chores, and care for himself, because his aunts didn’t. I was walking with Nell when I saw a familiar figure. (5) Eliza! I couldn't believe my eyes. Eliza was here, caring for Nell and I. I decided I should help her, and care for the sick as well. This is a very mature thing to do in my opinion. I helped care for the fever victims, along with Eliza. (3) I was ecstatic when I found Eliza. Finally someone who could take care of us! When we arrived to her house, we saw her brother, who looked very weak. Also two twins, who were named Robert and William. I could get used to living with Eliza, until the fever finally goes away when the frost comes.

  17. 1) September 27th, 1792
(Mattie’s point of view) Grandfather was gone. I was alone. I ran outside, it had been a cooler night, but I had thrown up what was rest of the little of what was in my stomach. 2) The man with the cart for the dead bodies was passing the coffeeshop, and I had to be strong. So I took grandfather’s lifeless body out. I helped the man push the cart to the burial sight. The diggers were tossing the bodies around like a rag doll! I had gotten so frustrated that I yelled at them. Then they started treating them with respect. As I was walking home, I had looked for food, but only found empty crates and rats. The town had looked abandon. It had looked dead. I had set on my way to find Eliza. I had tried to put a missing person’s report in the newspaper for mother, but Mr. Brown had refused. I had passed Mrs. Warner’s hat shop, it had been abandoned as well. An older lady had caught me looking for Mrs. Warner, and hit me over the back with her cane! On the way to find Eliza, I found a little girl who had lost her mother to the fever. Her name is Nell, she looked about three or four. I couldn’t get much information out of her. I had found Eliza, she was helping care for the infected. I ended up going home with Eliza. I met her family. Her brother, Joseph, got the fever. Sadly, her sister in-law had passed from it as well. I had told her everything, about grandfather, the robbery, everything. She informed me that mother was safe, and recovered. I had helped Eliza care for the sick, Joseph recovered and cared for the children. After a while, all three children had gotten sick. Eliza and I cared for them as best we could. We decided to take them to the coffeehouse. 3) I was not afraid anymore. I was not going to be a little girl anymore. I decided that i’m going to be an independant, strong woman. 4) I had already been left alone from this fever, as well as I had survived it. I had gotten sick, Mother had sent grandfather and I away, as she had gotten sick, and when we returned, thieves had robbed me of my possessions and my grandfather’s life. I had gotten sick and after that I became stronger than ever. I was not going to let this disease take Nell too. 5) I think Mattie is becoming stronger, because she had to bury her grandfather alone, as well as she took Nell in and took care of her after her mother died from the fever. 6) A connection I can make to Fever 1793 is from a show called Heartland, where a girl shows up on their property and instead of taking her to an orphanage, they took her in and eventually adopted her. -Audrey K.

    (1) It is now October, and Mattie has now made it back to the coffeehouse but before she got there she walked around town looking for food and eventually ended up staying at Eliza’s house for a while. (2) William, Robert, and Nell became sick with Yellow Fever, and went back to the coffeehouse for more air. Mattie and Eliza had little to no sleep while caring for them. Yellow Fever was finally resolved because of the first frost. Mattie and Eliza took all of the furniture outside and the little ones recovered from the fever.(3) Mattie felt rejoiced when she saw the frost because it meant that the fever was going to end. She also felt tired when she was caring for the little kids. She barely got any sleep before Eliza woke her up. (4) When Mattie was caring for the sick with Eliza, she was caring for patients with Yellow Fever. The little kids also caught the fever which resolved when the first frost came. (5) Mattie matured by helping care for fever victims and taking in Nell. When she helped victims, she was giving up her own time to help others. She also saw that there were too many children at the orphan house so she made the smart decision to not give Nell away to the orphan house. (6) When Mattie gave up her time to help others when she saw that they were hurting it was like how in the book Ghost he gives up all his time to help the people on the track team and helps his teammates when he realizes that they were hurting.

First person {1} The coffee house is where I had started my Journey then we went to the burial grounds where they had buried Grandfather I was so sad that I pushed the man because he didn’t pray over grandfather. So they wanted me to pray and that I did tears were headed and it was a sad time.{2} I have experienced a lot with not having my mom come back it has been stressful I don’t know if I should go to the orphan house or should I ask to stay with Eliza but none of that matters sometimes because all I can think of is Nathaniel and if he is ok his warm touch his gentle eyes but that's enough about him. Also I have seen my Grandfather being buried I wanted them to say a prayer and they said that they had too many bodies to bury and they didn’t have time I pushed to gain there focus and their respect and they let me lead the prayer.{3}I felt sad and stressed out knowing that my own Grandfather was dead,Mother was still missing and now I am taking care of a little child and I have to be strong for her . Seeing Eliza gave me hope and made me feel happy that someone from my family was still living and well she was helping out people and it felt good to help people. Third Person {5} Some instances of yellow fever is how Nell’s mommy died from yellow fever, also when Mattie was walking up the street and she was hit my the cane by the old woman was the woman being scared and worried that she would catch yellow fever from Mattie so she hit her so Mattie would go away.{6}I can connect Mattie to Samantha from 16 candles because Mattie is a strong independent female and she has a crush on someone who may or may not like her back and at the same does not let that get in the way of her work just like Samantha.

  20. Matties point of view
The date is september 27, and grandfathers body still lay on the floor in the coffeehouse covered as I left him the night before. I was hoping it was all just an awful dream, but no. (1) I woke to the sound of a young man yelling with his hoarse voice, “Bring out your dead.” he said. Over and over again a he was pushing a large cart with two corpses, a child and a young woman. He put grandfather in the cart and when he arrived to the burial site they just wanted to throw him in the hole with all of the other dead bodies. (2) But my grandfather, Captain William Farnsworth Cook, deserved a proper burial. So, I demanded the the men bury all the bodies that I would say a prayer for him to honor his memory. After I read a prayer from the book of Psalms, most of the men wiped their tears away. (3) After that, I was looking for some food when I saw a woman who looked almost exactly like Eliza. I decided to follow her and find out who she was. When I finally caught up to her she turned around and it really was her. I finally found Eliza. After all this time. She had been living with her brother his two sons and a woman named mother smith. I had also found a little girl named Nell whose mother had recently died of yellow fever. She had nowhere to go so I kept her and took her with me when I went to stay with Eliza and her family. I had also started helping Eliza work with the Free African Society helping take care of yellow fever patients. Eliza and I had been working since sunrise to sunset helping people. One day when we returned Joseph, Eliza's brother, was sitting crying. The twins and nell had gotten yellow fever. Eliza’s house was too close to the river and did not have enough windows to keep the children cool so, we took them to the coffee house. It was more open and was much farther away from the river. Throughout the nights the children were not getting any better but were also not getting any worse. Eliza’s suggested that we should bleed them. But I demanded that we shouldn’t. (4) When I was at Bush hill the french doctors had told me that the bleeding had killed more than it had saved and that it was not safe. So, I told Eliza the same thing. I continued to stay at their bedside with Eliza and fetch water for them. Eliza said how much of a help I’ve been and how much I have matured throughout the time the fever has been here. I had helped the Free African Society do their job, helped the twins and Nell and also helped Eliza’s family. (5)
I can relate chapters 20-25 of Fever 1793 to the disney movie Snow White. In the movie Snow White she goes around the Seven Dwarfs house to take care of the house and make sure they are fed and healthy. In Fever 1793 Mattie goes around with Eliza to make sure that the Fever patients are still fed, and even though they are not going to be 100% healthy they make sure that the patients are still stable. 3. I think that Mattie kept Nell instead of leaving her at the orphan house because since there were so many kids at the orphan house from the large number of people dying, that Nell would be safer and taken better care of with her. At Eliza's house, where they were staying, Nell would be fed, payed attention to, and would have Mettie, so keeping her had a lot of upsides.

This week has been kinda bumpy I found Eliza and I am staying with her with her grandma her brother and the twins Robert and William along with a little girl named Nell that I found while trying to find supplies.(1)With grandfather dead I had to give his body to the death cart to get buried but before he did I demanded that we would pray and we did so I hope that grandfather could go to rest knowing he was beloved by all. Also while I was looking for supplies I found Nell a little girl in a fever home with no one else and with her I found Eliza okay and helping fever victims.(2) I was sad at the begging of the week I was really upset about grandfather dying but at the end happy knowing that my friend Eliza is okay and we are back together.(3) With the frost getting closer and closer in time the more hope we have because we can be ridden of this rejected fever that has done so much damage to Philadelphia.(4) Using what mother has done to me I have been acting as a motherly figure towards Nell I have been carrying here giving her food making sure she is always happy and if she is happy I am.(5) My real world connection is how in the Hunger Games when Rue dies Katniss feels bad and makes a whole funeral for her just like how mattie took care of grandfather after he passed she wrapped him up and made everything like a real funeral.(6)

Days here have been hard without Grandfather. I missed him like crazy daily but I am still managing to hold myself together. I give it all to Eliza. She let me and Nell come into her house and I am very grateful for that. She is giving me a roof over my head and food so I don´t starve. This place she is letting me stay is nice and cozy and I am so happy Nell is happy. (1) I love love love helping Eliza. I would help her with the kids and everything until this morning helping, I hurt my foot. I scratched it on the rock ! How can I be so stupid. I love helping and now since I´m hurt Eliza sent me home. I guess it's for the best, my foot needs to heel. (2) I´m in pain. But I do this all for Mother and Grandfather. They deserve to see how hard I am working and how much they mean to me. I would do anything for them to be here with me. I am keeping myself together for Nell she deserves so much. That beautiful little girl.. Lost her family. It's honestly horrible. I am going to be here for her hurt or not hurt. She is my number one reason I am still fighting other then Mother and Grandfather. She will survive, even if it´ś the last thing I do. Wow I am starting to sound like Mother. (3) My poor sweet Nell and the Joseph´s boys have the fever. I am fearing it. I´m scared their little bodies are too little to handle the fever. Eliza wants to blood let them but I will not let them. I believe in them to get through this. They got this. The fever is almost over I think. If we pray they will make it.. I know it. (4) All I can think about is the kids. They are always on my mind. Are they fed? Bathed? Happy? Sad? Mad? Need any help? I treat and worry about them the same way Mother did to me. If anything were to happen to them I would be a mess and would not know what to do. I am happy these kids came into my life. They have made me a new person and I love them with all of my heart. (5) (My point of view) A real life connection I can make to these chapters is to the book, James and the Giant Peach. I can connect these two because James had to do chores for his Aunts to help them, while Mattie has to do chores for the children to help them the same when James had to help his aunts. (6)

(1)There are multiple locations in these chapters, some harder to pinpoint than others. 2 of the first locations are the coffeehouse and the burial grounds, when she is with Grandfather’s body. She then starts out into the streets of Philadelphia, set on finding Eliza. She looks on Fifth Street, South of Walnut. She passes the Dockside Taverns, and ends in an alley. Because Mattie is traveling, it is hard to point out her exact locations. Lastly, she ends up at Joseph’s house with Eliza, Nell and the boys. This is before they travel back to the coffeehouse, but it is the last new location. (2)Mattie faces multiple conflicts in these chapters. For one, she has to care of Nell. Mattie’s mother is missing, and Nell’s passed away. She has to take and care for the young child. She even tries to take her to an orphanage where she may have gotten better care, but it was overful. Secondly, she has to hunt down Eliza in the town. That is where most of the settings found in question 1 came from, Mattie and Nell traveling through Philadelphia to locate her. Last but definitely not least, the boys and Nell come down with Yellow Fever. They have to move them to the coffeehouse, where it is colder and airy. Food is limited, and all 3 kids are sick. There are many underlying conflicts, but those are just 3 that stand out and make the most sense. (3) Mattie’s emotions vary over this time. She feels hopeful while people are giving her hints and directions where they thought they saw Eliza, as well as when she sees her with another lady walking just ahead of her. She also feels extremely relieved in that moment where they make contact. She feels worried when Mother Smith makes a comment about another mouth to feed, and more specifically more worried about the children when they figure out they have the fever. (4)We don’t see Yellow Fever firsthand as much in this section. It is still there though, seeing as it is the antagonist of the book. Eliza and the other woman are treating fever victims and helping those people and their families. The reason Mattie ends up with Nell is because the girl’s mother died of the fever. One last background reason we don’t necessarily focus on as much is that Joseph, Eliza’s brother,’s wife died from the fever. Finally, the kids contract Yellow Fever. Mattie and Eliza decide that it is best to move them to the coffeehouse, where they can have more air and stay cool. (5)Mattie’s maturity and growth as a young woman is extremely visible in this section. As much as she loves Nell, she attempts to take her to an orphanage because she believes it is what could have been best for her. Mattie also gives up some of her food to her in an attempt to keep Nell’s strength up. We also see this growth when she is looking for Eliza. She runs past the drunk men, searches around all while carrying a young girl. Lastly, she takes on extra chores and late night work to help. She sews clothing, washes dishes and clothes, and sweeps the floors. All of those show how much Mattie has grown from chapter 1 to now, and how she is transitioning from a little girl to a young woman. (6)I can connect the events of chapters 20-25 to MacGyver. In one of the most recent episodes, a main character Jack leaves the show for an ‘army mission’. You can clearly tell that Mac (Angus MacGyver) is devastated. However, he stays strong and does what he needs to do on their last OP. We can compare this to season 1 of the show, where Mac’s girlfriend faked her death and lot’s of other things. Different from the latest episode, Mac falls apart. He doesn’t know how to react, and relies on his job to distract him. Mattie and Mac are alike in the way that they grow as people in terms of dealing with loss and extra baggage.

Mattie’s surroundings is now Eliza’s house. Now that Mattie found Eliza she is living here with Eliza and her family, and Nell. The place where Eliza and her family live is described as a dim-lit but clean-smelling and orderly.(22)

In these chapters Mattie faces the conflict of surviving on her own without anyone. Then later in the chapter she finds the problem of how she is going to care for Nell. Lastly Mattie and Eliza face the problem of having to care the three children who have yellow fever. (20,21,25)

Mattie has multiple responses to these conflicts but the one that changed the whole story and set it on a whole different path and this conflict was when the three children get yellow fever and Mattie responds to this conflict by sending all five of them (Eliza, Nell, the twins, and Mattie.)(25)

An instance in these chapters that had yellow fever issues in these chapters would be the food, and when the three children got yellow fever. The food problem was a fever problem because the fever was in town which meant no farmers wanted to come into town and food was very scares. Then when the three children got sick it was a huge problem because that meant that everybody else could get sick because yellow fever was contagious.(22,25)

Mattie is maturing in these chapters by caring for Nell and helping Eliza out with caring for the sick.

A real world connection to these chapters could be about how Mattie is worried about mother 24-7. This could be connected to Frozen. In Frozen Elsa cared everything about her sister and in the last couple of scenes you see that Elsa has created a huge storm because of how much she is worried about Anna. That is just like Mattie and Mother for all of these chapters.
