(1)September 6th 1793, We are at the coffee house and (2)(4)Grandfather has told us he has found help for mother, when Dr. Kerr came he examined mother and told us she had Yellow Fever, mother told me and Grandfather we had to leave the coffee house so we don't get sick.(3) I was so devastated and shocked I didn't know what to say. (5) Mattie has matured and became more independent and caring in these last few chapters because she has to find food and water for her and Grandfather when he is sick and they have nowhere to go. (6) A connection I can make is to Star Wars when Luke Skywalker gets his hand cut off and Princess Leia and Han Solo both care for him.

  3. Chap (10-14) (Mattie’s point of view)

(1): “The smell is horrid, it just smells of dead people, hearing and seeing Grandfather “flirting” with Mrs. Flagg and tasting that nice broth, seeing dead bodies being taken out, and being visited by doctors, one specific doctor I remember is Dr. Deveze. But before all of this I was the “Doctor” helping and surviving with Grandfather because we were simply kicked off the wagon because of some panicky Doctor, the nerve of some people.”

(2): “Surviving outside like some people do, can for the most part be challenging, finding food, finding water wasn’t hard, an old soldiers trick, you find a willows tree, there you go, water will be waiting for you. Even you may be able to find a fish or two. I was trying to catch one myself with a makeshift net, but King George the very helpful bird to the rescue, screws everything up. Stupid bird. Being in that hospital bed next to other victims, was truly scary. I felt great sympathy for this one young girl, saying ‘Why are you putting Mamma in that box?”. But what kept me going was seeing Grandfather alive and that gives me hope. Same with Mother even though I and Grandfather know nothing about her whereabouts doesn’t matter. I know Mama is tough and will be alive and waiting (to scold). Hopefully I will get out of here sooner than later and defeat this horrible Yellow Fever.”

(3): “I just felt heated when me and Grandfather were kicked out because of some nervous doctor. Trying to survive outdoors fending for me and Grandfather was a little rather difficult (especially when there’s some talking bird to ruin everything chance of getting fish). But when I was coming back with some pears, I do admit that I felt a little delusional. Then when I woke up. When waking up in the hospital then knowing I have yellow fever, I felt powerless. But having Mrs. Flagg and Grandfather (soon to be a couple-gross) it gave me hope to keep going and win against Yellow fever and get out of this hospital sooner than later.”

(5): “I felt like I was maturing before I was in this hospital for...for fever victims. Surviving in the outdoors during that time I felt more, what’s the word mature. Surviving for me and Grandfather was challenging, but in totality I felt like I was maturing. Then. But now that I have the yellow fever, just lying in a bed having help being fed, it makes me feel younger, which I not prefer, I prefer to be older.

(4): “Before I thought nothing about yellow fever until we found out Mother had it and now unfortunately, I...do. It just started with what I remember is that I was coming back with many pears. I started slowing down thinking the pears were rocks then everything went dark. I woke up next to what we're dead people being taken to there coffins and burial and other fever victims. It was just...to quick. Days have going by still being in his horrible hospital bed. Hopefully I will conquer this stupid fever and be on my merry way with Grandfather looking for Mother.”

    (6): Third Person
During the end of chapter 13, Mattie was doing her own thing then things started happening to her, then blackness. After that she had woken up in a hospital shocked then immediately visited by Mrs. Flagg greeting her nicely. I can relate to this moment because when I was younger, about 4 years old, I myself was doing my own thing. Then when I went into my parents room I had jumped into the corner of their tv door stand and I don’t remember anything else and things just went black for me. Then I remember waking up in a hospital and cared for right away just like Mattie.

    1. It was September 7th 1793, Mattie was taken to Bush Hill, which was a hospital in Philadelphia. Mattie and her grandfather were heading to the Ludington’s farm because her mother order her to leave. They got stopped by a doctor and are told that they are sick and have to go back to Philadelphia. (1) When Mattie and grandfather headed back to the coffeehouse they stop under a tree for a few days, Mattie went to find food by a farm, she had found a pear tree nearby. As she was walking back she started to have hallucinations. She had thought that the pears in her hands were rocks, then she fainted.(2) Mattie was heartbroken when she heard that she had to leave her mother. Mattie was very nervous that she would not be able to find food to survive.(3) Mattie ends up getting yellow fever, while she is in the hospital she doesn’t know what’s going on with people around her. Mattie was getting really worried about her mother because she had yellow fever as well and she didn't know were she was or if she was okay.(4) Mattie is delvopoling as a character because she is becoming more responsible. Mattie has been caring for grandfather and finding food for grandfather and her. Mattie is becoming less relaxed and more serious about surviving.(5) A real world connection to these chapters is the story of Snow White and the seven dwarfs because the dwarfs help Snow White just like Mattie is helping grandfather survive.(6)

  4. It is September 1793. Mattie is in Bush Hill, in the Coffeehouse, and in the wilderness. (1) During these chapters Mattie experienced a multitude of things. She contracted yellow fever, saw one of the treatment centers firsthand, survived a night outdoors with her grandfather, was rejected from passing through a city to get to ludington farms, and recovered from yellow fever. (2) During these few chapters, Mattie feels anger, betrayal, determination, and shock. (3) An instance of yellow fever is when Mattie is infected with it. This is a huge part of these chapters because it changes the setting (Mattie has to go to Bush Hill) and creates a new conflict in the novel. Another instance of yellow fever is when Mattie and grandfather are denied access to the city because they are thought to have yellow fever. (4) During these chapters, Mattie becomes more self reliant. This can be shown when she is forced to find food and water on her own when her grandfather is too weak and tired to do it himself. This is an example of her becoming more self reliant because before this point in the novel, she did not have to really do much on her own other than going to the market.(5) I can connect these few chapters to Brain from the book “Hatchet” During this book, Brian has to scavenge for food to survive. This connects to Mattie because Mattie had to do the same thing in order to survive with her grandfather whenever they were stranded with no shelter.(6)

In chapters 10-14 Philadelphia is really hot and it smells really bad. Mattie gets told by mother to leave the Coffee House because it’s not safe there anymore. Mattie and Grandfather end up trying to leave philadelphia. (1) Right now it's really hard to survive in Philadelphia so Mattie and her grandfather end up leaving. Unfortunately a doctor stops them and they are told to go back to philadelphia however they have no transportation and it's too far to walk. During this time Grandfather contracts a cold so that makes their situation even harder. Mattie tries to take care of Grandfather and looks for food Mattie gets to hot and passes out. Mattie wakes up in a hospital and is told she has yellow fever. (2) During these chapters Mattie feels really hot and confused. Mattie tries to take care of grandfather and passes out because of the heat. Mattie wakes up in the hospital and feels very confused on how she got there. (3) One instance of yellow fever is when Mattie end up getting the fever in these chapters. This is a really important part of these chapters because it changes where they end up and it causes more problems than they already have.(4) In chapters 10-14 Mattie becomes much more self-reliant because she has to find a way to care for her and her Grandfather in the wild. This shows how much Mattie has developed into a motherly figure. (5) One real world connection that I can connect to these chapters is the movie Hunger Games because they are forced to survive in the wild with little resources just like in the movie Hunger Games.

I really admire your connection, and I have a similar one. In "Supernatural", they are sent into a space that looks like different locations, but they are really just in an abandoned barn. They are sent by a trickster (later to be unmasked as the archangel Gabriel.) They have to survive inside a hospital drama series, a game show spoken in japanese and a reality TV show with a laughing track. The characters in your connection were given little resources, but the characters in mine were given little information. Also, great post!

The date was September 7th 1793, Mattie was taken to Bush Hill a hospital in Philadelphia for those contracted with yellow fever, after she fainted on her journey to find food. Previously before this Mattie and Grandfather were embarking on a journey to the Ludington’s farm because her Mother ordered them to leave so they wouldn’t get infected with the Fever. On their journey they get stopped by a doctor claiming that Grandfather had contracted the fever. 1.) After this they had to turn around and had to head back to the coffee house because there was no where else they could go. Mattie went to find food by a near farm she found a pear tree, as she was walking back with the pears in her hands she began to hallucinate and thought the peaches were rocks and then fainted. 2.) Mattie faces many struggles throughout these chapters she was heartbroken when she learned she had to leave her mother and was also nervous because she didn't know if she would be able to survive out by herself looking for food. 3.) Mattie contracts yellow fever throughout these chapters. 4.) Mattie develops more as a character through these chapter because she has to become more independent if she wants to survive and she also has become more responsible if she wants to survive through this epidemic. 5.) A real world connection is the hunger games because they have to learn how to survive if they want to win the games just like how Mattie and Grandfather have to learn how to survive together for a few days. 6.)

(Third person) In Chapters 10-14 Philadelphia is hot and does not have the most pleasant smell. Mattie was told by her mother to leave the coffee house with her Grandfather. Mother told Matie this because it wasn’t safe to be there anymore because she was sick. So they both end up leaving. (1) In Philadelphia it is really hard to survive because of yellow fever. That is why mattie and her Grandfather leave town but unfortunately a doctor told them to stop and go back home with her mother. However, they have no transportation and it is too far to walk on their feet. When this time was taken place Grandfather has caught a cold which makes things a lot harder. Mattie tries to take care of Grandfather but passes out because of the heat. Then Mattie wakes up in the hospital and was told she has yellow fever. (2) In these chapters Mattie feels very confused, hot, and sick. She was trying to take care of Grandfather but passed out because she was hot. Then she wakes up in the hospital and was told she has yellow fever. (3) In these chapters there some instances of yellow. One of the instances of yellow fever is when Mattie ends up getting the fever in the hospital. These events are important because it is explaining how things have fallen in the story. (4) In this part of the story Mattie becomes more independent and self-reliant. She finds ways to help take care of Grandfather and make sure he has all the things he needs to feel better. This is showing how Mattie is learning how to take care of things by herself and not needing other people's help. (5) A real-life connection is when someone graduates high school and moves on and goes to college. This is showing how people become independent by learning how to take care of their self and they don’t always need help from their parent or the person they lived with. They were under someone else's rules and now they have rules of their own and to follow them the way they want too. (6)

  9. (Matties point of view) Chapters 10-14

My surroundings have changed a lot throughout these past few weeks. I started this month at the coffee house, where I usually am. Mother was diagnosed twice by two different doctors. The first doctor said it was just a common sickness but the second doctor said that my mother had yellow fever. This news devastated me, Grandfather, and Eliza. Mother of course, wasn’t feeling well so I thought it would be my job to take care of her but she refused and sent me to the Luddington's farm. Then me and Grandfather were dropped into the middle of nowhere because they thought Grandfather had yellow fever. He didn’t even have any symptoms! Then I went to find food and my head began to spin and next thing you know I woke up in the hospital with yellow fever.(1)
These days have been the most dangerous days of my life. First, Mother was diagnosed with Yellow fever, then we were thrown out of a wagon on our way to the country because they thought Grandfather was sick, I had to take care of myself and Grandfather in the middle of nowhere, and I got diagnosed with yellow fever.(2)
When I found out that Mother got this deadly fever I completely freaked out. Mother wanted me out of the house because she didn’t want me to get sick. So me and Grandfather went out to the country and we were thrown out of the wagon like a sack of potatoes. This made me really upset because Grandfather was fine and I really don’t understand why they threw us out in the first place. Then when I had to take care of myself and grandfather I was scared because what if he really had the fever and I couldn’t even bare losing him. I also had ended up passing out and waking up in a hospital that gave me the bad news of yellow fever. All I could think about was where mother was and if I would ever see her again.(3)
This time yellow affected me extremely personally. Me and my own mother were diagnosed with this dreadful disease. This yellow fever is causing horrifying issues in this usually busy, charming town.(4)
In this span of days I have been pretty proud on how I showed responsibility. When I was with Mother I took care of her and when we were in the middle of the country, I was able to keep Grandfather alive and those were my major priorities. In these moments I proved to myself that I was responsible and able to care for others.(5)
My connection is between chapters 6-9 and The Hunger Games. I am connecting these two because in chapters 10-14 Mattie is responsible and takes care of her mother as well as her grandfather and in The Hunger Games Katniss feels like it is her responsibility to take care of Peeta.(6)

(Mattie’s Point of View) It has been a few days since Grandfather and I left the coffee house for the Ludington's’ Farm, and I must say these few days have been very eventful. It is now nearing nightfall, and I am sitting in my bed at Bush Hill. Writing seems to be holding back the tears I have for mother, whom I still don’t know the location of. (1) First, these few days have been eventful because while on the way to the Ludington’s Farm, Grandfather had a coughing fit, which led the men that stopped us to believe he was sick with the fever. That prevented us from continuing our journey any further, and we were banished to the side of the road to fend for ourselves. Next, it seemed Grandfather really did have a sickness of sorts, but surely not the fever. He had none of the symptoms near those of mother’s. Due to Grandfather’s grippe, I had to find food and water and care for the both of us, until I collapsed. The next thing I knew, I woke up here, at Bush Hill. (2) I thought, ‘This can’t be. I must find Grandfather! I must help him!’ But, Mrs. Flagg ordered me to stay in bed until I recovered. From the fever. Although I am grateful for everything Mrs. Flagg and Bush Hill are doing for me here, I must say I do miss skipping about in the market, or even working at the coffee house. (3) Now, thinking about it, I understand why mother wanted me nowhere near her while she was sick. Little did I know I would end up contracting the fever too. I can only hope mother is doing just as well, or better than I am right now. I hope she got the care she needed, and had the sense to get off of those crime-stricken streets, and into the countryside. (4) And, as most would imagine, I am still trying to sneak out of bed here and there to check up on Grandfather. So far I have been unsuccessful. Mrs. Flagg has told me I need to stay in bed and heal myself before healing anyone else, but I can’t help the feeling that taking care of Grandfather is my job. (5) (My Point of View) These chapters include a conflict similar to that in a show called Supernatural. In Supernatural, two brothers risk their lives to protect average people from supernatural beings, and they often get hurt. This relates to these chapters because Mattie helping her mother, and putting her mother’s life before hers, resulted in her getting Yellow Fever. Also, this relates to Mattie’s conflict because even though she is very sick, she is still trying to help her Grandfather. (6)

Lots of things happen in chapters 10-14. (1) They start off at the coffeehouse, with Dr. Kerr from Scotland. Chapter 10 starts in the early morning of September 6th, 1973 in Philadelphia. Beyond that, we see Mattie and Grandfather in multiple locations. When they leave the coffeehouse, they are first in a carriage with a farmer, his wife and baby on the road to the Ludington's farm. They are stopped outside of Gwynedd, they stay in that general stretch of land until Mattie wakes up at Bush Hill, in the hospital. (4) Mattie is around Yellow Fever much more than past sections. First, her mother is diagnosed by Dr. Kerr, and she sees the signs of the fever. On the carriage, they are stopped by men who think Grandfather has Yellow Fever, but he really doesn’t. Most importantly, Mattie contracts the fever. She is kept in the Bush Hill Hospital, waking up after fainting. She started hallucinating and became confused; that is when she fainted. (2) Mattie faces many struggles, one of them being sick with Yellow Fever. From the beginning of the section, she has to watch her mother get sick and then leave her while the purge her. Secondly, she and grandfather get kicked off of their only ride to the Ludington’s Farm. Not even a farmer will let them in. She then has to take care of her grandfather, and he is still sick with the Summer Grippe. She has to find food, drink and ultimately make sure he doesn’t die. Then, she herself gets sick. Mattie has to overcome death, get rid of the sickness in her body. Those are just the main 4 issues, there are many underlying problems she hasn’t solved and questions she hasn’t found an answer for. (3) In these chapters, we see Mattie feel a variety of different emotions. When she is at home with her mother sick, she feel helpless and sorrowful. When she is kicked out of the carriage, she feels betrayed. They were just trying to get to safety, and neither the people from Gwynedd, the driver and his family, or the farmer who she begged for help would just give them some food or a place to sleep. When she wakes up at Bush Hill, she feels many emotions. I believe one of the strongest feelings she has is worry. Some examples of times she worries are when she first wakes up, after the nightmare, when she finds out they are at Bush Hill, the other people around her and after she finds out how long they have been gone. Along with all of her unanswered questions, Mattie has a lot to worry about in these chapters. (5) In 10-14, there are several instances of Mattie maturing and growing up. For example, when she takes care of grandfather, she is showing maturity. In the very first chapter, she barely wakes up and is made breakfast by Eliza. Yet in these chapters, she lets the adult (Grandfather), rest and get better. Mattie pulls herself together in a time of crisis. She uses her resources to fish, look for water and other foods and carry fruit in hot sun on a long path when she herself is exhausted. At Bush Hill, she is made to stay in bed and rest. Instead of being stubborn and getting out of bed, insisting she is fine, she listens. She does what is best for herself, and that shows immense maturity. (6) I can compare Mattie gaining maturity and growing as a person to Fred and George Weasley of the Harry Potter series. Much like Mattie, they are very innocent and immature. They spend lots of their time playing practical jokes and pranks; causing mischief the rest of the time. However, as they grow older and evolve as people, we see them becoming more mature, much like Yellow Fever is changing Mattie. Fred and George take the morphing potion and try to rescue Harry Potter from Voldemort. They eventually both become entrepreneurs, running their own business. Fred even dies in the Battle of Hogwarts, trying to save people. Both the twins and Mattie gain maturity over the course of the series and/or book/movie, and are trying to save and care for people.

I think that if Mattie had gone to the orphanage, things probably would have gone downhill. There would be too many children in there, and nobody would listen to her and look for Mother. I also think with Grandfather still sick and then on his own, he would not last very long. If there was a second ending of the book where it all ends horribly, I believe Mattie going to the orphanage would be the cause. (Thanks!)

    (1) Lucille has the yellow fever, and we are doing all we can to help her. She told us to leave the town, so we did. This story starts with us in a wagon on our way to pass through Pembroke. (2/3) I was tired and weak on the ride away from the coffeehouse. I wouldn’t have agreed to this, but it was the best for Lucile. On the ride, we saw a frantic doctor who denied our entrance to the city. How dare they! Mattie and I felt betrayed, we didn’t even have the fever. They threw us off, without checking our eyes, or throats. Mattie and I had to figure something out, because we are stranded in the middle of nowhere. (5) Mattie took control of the whole situation. She found food, a fishing spot, and a new place for me to rest, since the place where I slept was too hot. Not just that, but she even tried to catch a fish for me! I guess that my various survival lessons are paying off! (6) Mattie is reminding me of that girl named Honey Santana, the girl from the book Nature Girl. In fact, the book kind of reminds me of our situation. In the book, many people are dying, and the main character, Honey, has to learn to survive in the wilderness, with no bare necessities. (4) I had just woken up when I noticed that Mattie was on her way back to the tree with pears. She seemed like she was all over the place, stumbling back, and looking to the sky. Then, out of the blue, she collapsed. There she was on the clear icy lake, scattered pears shaping the top of her head. I had to get her to the hospital immediately, because I think that I just found another yellow fever victim.

  13. It is september 6th, 1793. I wake up and notice that Dr Keer was at the coffee house with mother.(1) He was just there to check on mother and he told us that she has yellow fever.(2) I could not believe it. Not mother. She would do everything right. Why does she deserve it, I thought. What did she do to deserve it. (3) Yellow fever is a sickness that mother suddenly got and it is very serious. (4) I am extremely surprised but I am positive she will get through it . I know I have to stay strong for grandfather and myself but most importantly, I had to stay strong for my mother. (5) I read a book once called ¨Beauty and the beast¨ and my situations now remind me of that. Belle's mother in the story also got sick suddenly so it was sort of the same as what is going on now in my life. (6) -Aly E

I would of never thought to use one of disney's loving and caring stories, you really dug a little deep and found something. Another connection could be how the main character lost someone they loved due to a sickness, (but I really like you connection.) :)

September 7th, 1793, Grandfather, Mattie, and family are in a wagon making their way to Gwynedd.(1) Mattie became very defensive and angry when the doctor that stopped them said that Mattie and Grandfather couldn’t pass because he thought Grandfather was sick.(3) After being forced to go back Mattie and Grandfather had to stop and rest but as the day went on they both started to become hungry so Mattie went to go catch a fish and right as she got one King George swooped down and made her drop it.(2) Mattie trying to be responsible and mature tried to get food for the both of them after the fish idea failed Mattie found what she thought was fruit but she was hallucinating and passed out.(5) At this point in the book we know that Polly might have died from the fever, mother too, and Mattie has it.(4) My real-world connection is the Maze Runner just like how Mattie had to try and to survive with little materials Thomas and the other people did too.(6)

Dr. Kerr came to the coffeehouse to see mother, he said she had yellow fever. Dr. Rowley had no clue what he was talking about. Rowley said she only had a autumnal fever. Everyone thought it would be best if grandfather and I went away, we did. We were traveling in a wagon with a farmer and his family. (1) We came so far then were stopped by a doctor who was checking whoever came through their town, of yellow fever. They thought Grandfather had the fever and the farmer kicked us off the wagon. We were out by ourselves for days. I got the fever and ended up in the hospital.(2) I can’t believe the farmer just left us there all alone with none of our clothes or food. I was still worried about mother, I hoped she was all better by then. She probably was, and up on her feet. I had to take care of Grandfather and I until we are able to get somewhere with proper food and care for Grandfather he is sick with a cough and is too weak. Then I became sick with yellow fever and fainted, I was taken to the hospital where I was treated.(3) Mother had the fever, now I did it was so unreal to me, like a movie or a book. It seems as though just yesterday we all were living a normal life. Me, mother, grandfather, and Eliza, just another day at the coffeehouse. We have to wait until frost which will take the fever away and everything will be over with.(4) I became more responsible while taking care of Grandfather and I while we were out in nowhere. Mother would be proud of me, if she knew what I was doing to take care of Grandfather.(5) In the Darkest Minds, there is a group of kids trying to get away from the camps that were holding them, and travel across the country. They all have to take care of each other and survive. This reminds me of how Mattie has to take care of Grandfather to survive when they were stranded, and had nowhere to go because grandfather was sick.

(Matties point of view) 1) It’s been horribly hot in Philadelphia still. 2) Eliza and Grandfather have found help for Mother for the fever. His name is Dr. Kerr. I’d been helping Eliza in the coffee shop a lot more. But, it was time for Grandfather and I to leave, as mother does not want me there in Philadelphia. So we had left. I had fallen asleep on the wagon, but I awoke when the wheels had stopped turning. I asked why we stopped and then saw four horsemen blocking our way. The farmer who was guiding the wagon had soon thrown Grandfather and I off, as he thought Grandfather was sick. They had abandon us in the middle of nowhere! Turns out it Grandfather only had a summer grippe. I had to care for him in the middle of nowhere for a few days, using the resources of a stream, and a berry bush. A chestnut tree for shade. After a few days, Grandfather and I were getting tired of berries, so I had set off to find something else. I had found a pear tree! As I was walking back to the chestnut tree, the fruit had become very heavy, and the tree seemed to get farther and farther, I tried to call Grandfather's name, but I couldn’t make a sound. I couldn’t think straight, then, all I could see was blackness. 3) I had felt very tired what with leaving the coffee shop and caring for Grandfather. 4) I’ve been very overwhelmed, and scared with all of this yellow fever stuff. Mother had it, one of my old friends had it and sadly couldn’t fight through it. What if Eliza gets it? Or Nathaniel? 5) I think Mattie is maturing in these chapters because she takes care of Grandfather who is too weak to even stand up at that moment, she finds a clean stream, food, and starts fires at night to keep them warm as well. 6) A real world connection that I can make with these chapters is A book I read called The Hatchet where a boy gets stranded in the middle of nowhere and uses only natural resources of the forest to survive for a long time. I can connect this because Mattie uses natural resources to survive for a few days and to help Grandfather survive as well.

(1)It's been hot and miserable in philadelphia these past couple of weeks. Mother has been diagnosed with yellow fever, the first doctor said she would be fine but the other one said she had gotten the fever. (2)Mother told us to leave the coffeehouse so we wouldn't get the fever but grandfather had gotten week so we stopped under a willow tree and a few days later i had been diagnosed with the fever at bush hill. (3)I was scared i wouldn’t ever see mother again and what was going to happen to grandfather is we hadn't gotten better. (4)people are starting to hide from the fever locking doors and not going out. Some people are running and fleeing out of philadelphia. (5)I was proud when i had found water and berries by the willow tree, i had been so close to catching that fish. I felt very responsible taking care of grandfather and finding some food.

    (1) Mattie is still at the coffeehouse, but mother got sick and she and grandfather went off to the Ludington’s farm. They were stopped on the way and Mattie got the fever and was taken to Bush Hill. When she finally wakes up, she realizes that she had been gone for 5 days. (2) Mattie was trying to help mother, and in doing so she was forced out of the town. While she and grandfather were on their way out they were stopped. Mattie protested that she and grandfather didn’t have the fever, but they didn’t believe her. Also when they were forced to go back they stopped when grandfather was sick. Since grandfather was not feeling well she was forced to go and get food for him. (3) Mattie was upset that she had to leave the coffeehouse when mother was sick. Mattie was also brave when she set out on her own to find water and food for her and grandfather.(4) When they were riding in the wagon the doctor wrongly proclaimed that grandfather had Yellow Fever because of his cough. Later, Mattie was taken to Bush Hill because she had caught the fever while trying to get food and water. (5) When she and Grandfather were kicked off of the farmers wagon mattie took on the responsibilities of caring and getting food and water for Grandfather because he was not well enough to do so himself. Mattie was also able to not completely go crazy out loud when Dr. Kerr said mother did have the fever. (6) In Toy Story 2, Buz in replaced by an imposter, but he proves the imposter wrong. Also, in the movie concussion, the doctors didn’t know that the players had concussions. They thought it was something else, just like Dr. Rowley said that mother didn’t have to fever, but was later proven wrong.

I was at home and mother was sick I was so worried because she wanted to take me to the Ludington’s farm, I don't want to go I love my home and it is where I will always stay and love and with my mom being sick that is an even better reason for me to stay.(2) I have experienced my mother being sick and that is the hardest thing is having my mother being sick and with Eliza shooting my out like im a fly It is very hard knowing that there is something that could be done and I can't do it.(3) I’ve been feeling really sad lately with going to the luddington's and being thrown off the wagon I felt abandoned I have never felt like this before betrayed, sad, forgotten it’s hard to think of all this happening all because it yellow fever.(4) Yellow fever has overcame my life Im helpless and scared and I don’t know where I got yellow fever from it has baffled me the whole time i have been staying in bush hill.(5) (third person) Mattie has matured by not letting anything hold her back even when she was thrown out of the wagon she did not let that hold her back she still managed to get food of her and grandfather and making sure that grandfather was ok.(6)I can relate Mattie T.C. Callahan from The Night Shift because If there is for the best and there is something else going on then he would fight everything till he could make a difference just like Mattie did when she was told that she had to go to the Ludington’s farm. Also T.C. is also strong and independent, Like when he went to Syria, He had to save his friend Sid and he had to choose between loosing his life by taking a chance with another soldier or staying back where he was safe and he wanted to save his friend Sid just like Mattie wanted to save mother than save herself and Attempt to go to the Luddington's farm (but she didn’t have a choice).

It’s been a crazy last couple days. It all started on September 6, whenever another doctor came to see mothers condition. She ordered that grandfather and I went to the ludington’s farm so we would be safe from the fever. Grandfather and I were on our way to the ludington’s farm when we were stopped on our way in to Pembroke. After that a couple crazy things happened. (1) Dr. Kerr, the second doctor to see my mother, was an educated doctor from Scotland who came to check out my mother. He confirmed that my mother did not have autumnal fever, she has yellow fever. I hate that we have to leave Mother, but if that is what she really wants then that is what we will do. (2) On the way to the ludington's farm we were stopped by guards at the Pembroke entrance to be checked for yellow fever. The doctor checked the little family by looking under their eyelids and down their throats. But, when he got to Grandfather and I the second Grandfather coughed the doctor diagnosed him with yellow fever, no checkup or anything. It was all so unfair. It was too far to walk with Grandfathers condition so we were forced to sit on the side of the road where the guards had thrown us out of the wagon. We were starving and Grandfather was exhausted. I was so angry, but I had to find food and water so I could get Grandfather healthy enough to walk back home. (3) After I had returned from the river Grandfather suggested that I go and find a farm to get blankets and food. I had found a pear tree and started walking back when everything went black all of a sudden. When I had woke, I was laying in a bed. On both sides of me there were more people in beds just like mine. I was marked with the black substance that marked a victim of yellow fever. I had yellow fever. Grandfather looked fine when he came to see me, but I looked worse. (4) Despite all of the bad things that have happened, I am very proud of myself because of what I did these last couple days. Even though I got yellow fever that was something that I could not control. But, after the wagon left us I found berries for Grandfather and I, found a stream to get water, thought of a new way to catch fish, and almost caught one. I left Grandfather to find a farm and even though no one would help me once I found it I still managed to find food. (5)
In the show Survivor the people have to find food in the woods and make shelter out of things they find. This relates to chapters 10-14 in Fever 1793 because Mattie has to find a river to get water, as well as food to keep her and Grandfather healthy. She also had to make a fishing net out of her dress because it was the only resource she had. This is like in Survivor because they have to build shelter out of trees because it is the only resource they have. (6)

    2. I think that the doctor didn't check Mattie and Grandfather because since he saw that Grandfather had a cough that there was no need to check him for yellow fever, because whatever he had could be contagious.

In chapters 10 - 14 in Philadelphia there is not a pleasant smell and it is very very hot. Mother told Mattie to leave because it was no longer safe for Mattie there and she needed to be far away from the sickness. Her and Grandfather set out on a journey far away from the sickness to stay safe. Sadly on this journey they get stopped by a doctor saying that Grandfather has yellow fever. (1) During these chapters Mattie faces many conflicts. Grandfather and Mattie leave and are sent back to Philadelphia because Grandfather is sick with yellow fever. While Grandfather isn’t really sick with yellow fever he has another sickness that causes him to be weak and can’t move anywhere. They then have nowhere to go and have to stay where they are. (2) The way Mattie responds to this conflicts is Mattie takes action. The way Mattie does this is, when Grandfather is sick and can’t move, Mattie takes care of finding food and safe water to drink. (3) During these chapters, Mattie herself gets yellow fever. We know this because she wakes up in the hospital we’re the doctors told her that she has the fever. (4) Through this chapters Mattie has matured a lot. She had to become more independent and responsible. This is because there was no one there to help her and she had to help herself and collect things on her own. She was very responsible while getting the things she needs and being there for Grandfather while he is sick and can’t do much, Mattie took charge the same way her Mother would. (5) A real-world event I can connect to these chapters is the book “Number the Stars”. I can relate these chapters to this book because the girls get taken away from their parents by the Nazi’s. The girls then have to learn how to take care of themselves and become more independent. Much like in these chapters Mattie was forced to leave her Mother and had to rely on herself. (6)

1.Today when I woke up it was really strange I was surrounded by beds on either sides of me. When I started to look around I noticed something, something odd. To my left slept a young women, then to my right was someone under their covers, completely under their covers. It looked like I may be a.. a... a corpse. Later I realized something, that I was in a Yellow Fever hospital. I had been put in a huge room that remind me of the Ogilvie mansion, it had a gigantic chandelier that looked as if it reflected a thousand mirrors in the middle of the room.(14)

2.Like you could already guess from my description above of where I am you could probably guess what I about to say. Yes, I have Yellow Fever. The first thought of me having yellow fever is horrible. First mother then me, horrible. The only thing I can keep thinking about thought is if mother can push thru then so can I. The only thing is we can’t seem to contact mother so who knows if she is okay, I bet she is thought. Mother is a strong woman she could push through.(14)

3/4. It feels strange to be a fever victim. Mother, was mother alright? It has been going thru my head over and over. Is mother alright? Is she safe? Am I safe? Is grandfather safe? What is going on? What was happening to the world? It has all been turned upside down lately. All I can think about is how there was one normal day in Philadelphia, then the next day it was a town full of fever victims. (14)

    Third person view
5.Mattie is maturing or developing thru these chapters and acting more like her mother and a really mature women. An example of this happening is in chapter 13 she goes to get food and water. She goes and even though it is scorching hot she still goes to get supplies and help.(13)

6.A connection to the real-world could be used as “Spider-man, Into the spider verse.” We could use this because in chapter 14 she goes to help grandfather and find food and help. Then in “Spiderman, Into the spider verse” Miles goes and help Spiderman, Spider Gwen, and others. Even thought he couldn’t control his powers he still tried to help everyone. Like Mattie, Miles put others before himself because doing this could of killed both of them but they did it anyway.

  25. During these chapters, Mattie is in the coffee house, the market, and on the streets. The time is late september. (1) During these chapters, Mattie's grandfather dies, and her house is ransacked. (2) When grandfather was killed, Mattie felt extremely sad and mournful. She was discouraged when she saw that all of her food was gone. She was also resourceful whenever she scavenged for food in the garden. She was making the best out of the situation that she found herself in. (3) During these chapters, an instance of yellow fever is when philadelphia descends into total anarchy. It transforms into a lawless society were people must raid houses and murder in order to stay alive. (4) Mattie is developing as a character by feeling a wider range of emotions than usual. For example, she felt sad when her grandfather died and fearful when the thieves where inside their house. (5) A real world connection that I can make to these chapters is the Fallout game series. They connect because the Fallout series takes place in a post apocalyptic world where the government has collapsed and society has fell into anarchy. This connects to Fever 1793 because Philadelphia has also collapsed and people are stealing and scavenging for resources.

Today we set off on our journey to the ludington's farm along the way many bugs came and kept swarming around us.Grandfather and i had reviewed my soldier training. We laid down for a nap but suddenly i was awoken to the carriage stopping. I tried to wake Grandfather but he would not wake. Some men from the town came to inspect us to check if we had the fever. Grandfather woke up coughing the doctor did not let us pass because of this. The farmer had left us there on the road .On the way back to philadelphia we found a chestnut tree to rest under.Grandfather fell asleep and i went to look for water i found some. I went back out to look for food and found some pears but I don't feel to good and they are getting pretty heavy.I can relate this to the book the hatchet when they are abandoned and need to survive in the wild.
